66 years ago today American servicepeople were making the ulitimate sacrifice in the largest invasion in history fighting to end the evil scourge of Nazism. Our troops continue today fighting against evil and dying for our nation. Their sacrifce should be appreciated by all of us.

2499 American service people died on D-Day. Our servicemen and women continue to make that sacrifice today protecting us from evil.

I was always under the impression that ~50,000 died on D-Day; 2,499 is such a small number when you see renditions of the battle on Saving Private Ryan and elsewhere.

A ladyfriend of mine's grandfather was there on D-Day and was lucky enough to survive it. Absolutely astonishing what they did.

The previously quoted 2499 American dead on June 6th, 2000 of those on Omaha Beech
4414 total Allied deaths that day

50,000 would be a better estimate for the entire Normandy campaign
53,714 Allied dead for the Normandy campaign

http://www.ddaymuseum.co.uk/faq.htm

those sacrifices by our servicepeople continue till today fighting evil in Aghanistan and Iraq and around the world

True heroes...I wonder how many current professional athletes would leave their sport in their prime to go fight for their country?
