Final friendly in anticipation of next Saturdays opener. No Jozy, no Gooch in the starting 11. Donovan and Dempsey at the wide mid field positions from right to left. Buddle and Findley up top. Buddle melts one past Schwarzer from 18 about 4 minutes in 1-0 USA

As I wrote in the world cup topic, this field looks like garbage. My high school field looked better than this. Findley just missed an open net, to be fair I think even he was surprised he wasn't called offside.

1-1 Cahill off a corner in the 19th minute. This is a really, really narrow pitch so whoever takes care of the ball will get opportunities.

Buddle gets a second this time off a header. Yeah, so fucking happy that Brian Ching isn't in South Africa to take minutes away from this guy right now. Great cross from steve cherundolo to set that up

Yeah. The organization of the back line is terrible right now. I like Jay Demerit but he isn't very adept when it comes to keeping a defense organized. Gooch is the lynch pin of that back line he tends to keep things nice and tight. It doesn't help the defense when there is so little possession in the midfield

When did Martin Tyler sign on with ESPN.......or is this just a one time deal for the World Cup?

Also, those fucking horns they're blowing in the stands is annoying! I thought FIFA was going to out law those things after the Confederations Cup?

Tyler is under contract for the duration of the World Cup. ESPN does, or at least tries, to bring in a big name to do games anytime they have the rights to a big tournament. ESPN brought Andy Gray for Euro 2008 to do both semi's and the final as well as some other matches.

I remember that, at least Tyler is at the actual venue, pretty sure Andy Gray was in the studio doing color commentary.

If I recall, the stance FIFA took was those (or noisemaking in general, this is just the latest tool used to make it) are part of the African soccer culture, and they were not going to interfere with such a thing, as they are the hosts.

(To paraphrase, FIFA says North America and Europe can get the fuck over it)

Yeah I mean, there is only one African nation with a legitimate chance of doing well and I don't think they use the horns in Ivory Coast so it isn't like a bunch of African nations are getting an advantage.

^ I see Cameroon sneaking into the next round to play Italy. But yeah, any advantage is minimal and won't play a role in the outcome.

Culture or not, those horns are annoying as all hell. Take a page out of the Italian fan book and ignite some flares.;)

Woo, figured since this thread had little activity that the US lost, glad to see that wasn't the case.

I'm thinking if the US gets out of group play (they better) we could definitely knock off Germany in the round of 16. If that match-up were to happen, of course.

USA has looked good going forward the last 135 minutes. Defense will be absolutely shredded versus the better squads though if they keep playing like this.
