AT&T will change their plans as of June 7th. Kiss unlimited data for $30 goodbye. Now, you can have the "Data Pro Plan" for $25...but that's only good for 2GB of usage. Then it's $10 for every GB of usage after that.
AT&T is also going to be offering tethering once the new iPhone comes out for an extra $20 on top of the $25 plan...however, you are still limited to 2GB of usage.
Let's hope the other carriers don't follow suit with this. This is bad news for AT&T customers...and if they lose the iPhone, this move could spell doom for AT&T as a company.

I hate AT&T ... every time I see that Luke Wilson commercial, I want to beat his chubby ass. In New York, AT&T is AWFUL, I am constantly out of service and missing calls in MIDTOWN MANHATTAN. Switching soon, might ditch my iPhone for a Droid, not sure.

Although, 2GB is a lot. I'm not a big user by any means but I do stream video to my phone every few days, and do quite a bit of web surfing, and the most I've spent in a month is about 1GB.

pretty much solidifies my leaving att as soon as the iphone is on another network, or 4g comes to fruition.

i did 1.6 GB 1 month and i was watching justin.tv every night while on travel for like 3.5 weeks. you have to try to beat 2GB/month.

2GB is a lot of data. But it could be used up VERY quickly...especially by iPhone users. I use my Droid like crazy! I stream music from Pandora every time I get in my car. I play games that transmit data during my downtime. I watch YouTube videos on my phone. I use my phone as a Navigation system. That's all on top of regular browsing for sports scores, and checking email.
Add onto that a tethering option...and I could see a lot of customers use 2GB of data within 2 weeks!

I just checked my data usage and I've only received 2.1GB during the lifetime of my phone (almost 2 years). That seems low, but I really don't watch many videos or stream music or anything. I mostly just play games, check/send email and surf the web.

I just checked mine and I've used 3.3 GB over the course of 11 months. Isn't this for "new" smartphone users only? The story I read on USA Today said for new smartphone users, not existing. Although, I'd save money on the $25/month data plan.

Yeah, if you stay on your current plan you are probably fine.
If you go to renew or something like that I am sure they would make you switch.

Yeah, this isn't a big deal. Besides, that "unlimited" plan was actually capped at 5gb.

If they do, I am all over it while I ride out the end of my contract. I would just drop to the 200MB plan and cut my data bill in half.

The article I read said other carriers will be quick to follow suit now that AT&T has broken the ice. Anything to generate a new revenue stream I guess.

At some time a cell phone has to come out that is customer friendly. Cheap unlimited texting, data, etc. Cell phone company mark-ups are atrocious, so I will not be surprised when a company like this comes out.

Thanks. 3.8G received in about 12 months but thats only my phone. My wife looks at those fucking lolcats 24/7 so god knows what she's received in the last year.

Yeah, but every iPhone is on a separate data plan and I seriously doubt that she's used as much as you. You'd probably both be safe to downgrade if it's allowed.

These do exists but they are pretty crappy as far as coverage. With cell phones you are going to get what you pay for 10 times out of 10, and you can take that to the bank.

I've used 1.2 GB of data on my EVO since May 14th when I got it. It's not even my primary phone, and I don't even take it home from work.

just checked my Droid..this perioed, I've only used about .71 gigs. I use Pandora, navigation, and the internet every day. Not sure how much total data I've used.

We were a little worried that the change over to 4G mobile data standards like LTE and WiMAX would get expensive for consumers. ON the heels of Sprint's announcement that users of the EVO 4G would have to pay a $10 premium for data, Verizon is talking about a tiered pricing model for LTE data when it launches. Instead of allowing "unlimited" plans (5GB data cap), Big Red may instead charge different fees based on the amount of data used.
This might be a good deal for people that only use a little data, but in the future with much faster data connections, who's only going to use a little data? The thing to be aware of is that LTE data networks are expected to be much more efficient at delivering data. Carriers may only incur a half or one-third of the costs per megabyte of data on LTE as they do now. All things considered, we'd be surprised if even the cheap plans are a good deal.
Of course, we won't know how bad of a deal we're getting until LTE rolls out. Verizon is expecting the first round of LTE handsets to be available in early 2011. These will be LTE for data only, much like the EVO 4G uses WiMAX only for data. Verizon expects to be using LTE for voice calls by 2012. How much wireless data do you use in a month? Would you like a tiered pricing structure?

This is actually gonna be good for MOST people. I use a BB and am on it ALL THE TIME...and i still come under the new limit.
