I was looking around facebook and clicked on the page of a kid I went to elementary/junior high/high school with. On his wall he had posted that he was starting to work out and eat better and was doing some mountain biking. I thought "good for him".

Then I read one of the comments on that post. It was basically saying that he shouldn't exercise/that time could be better spent being godly because the bible says that exercise profits little.

The thing is, I'm not one who likes to bash religion or even extremely religious people. But when you take the bible's teachings to places that they were never meant to be it sort of makes me angry. The bible is not a book that teaches every scenario you'll ever be involved in and some people just don't get that.

The crazies give all the reasonable religious people a terrible reputation. (Works with non-religious too)

Yup. One of those nasty side effect of civilizations being more concerned about conquering than learning. When the Romans were at their peak, there was a lot of learning going on. Then Christianity rose to power and destroyed the Roman Empire; first by the huge Christianity vs. Roman (formerly Greek) religion conflicts and then with a particular Crusade leading to the East half of the empire (it's Istanbul, not Constantinople!...for They Might Be Giants fans) getting sacked.

And the broken Roman Empire crumbled with more primitive groups taking control, which led to the Dark Ages. Way to go, holy wars!!!!

The thing is, I'm not one who likes to bash religion or even extremely religious people. But when you take the bible's teachings to places that they were never meant to be it sort of makes me angry. I honestly have no idea where this person thinks that the Bible says that exercise profits little. The only thing I can think of is the Sermon on the Mount when Jesus tell his followers not to worry about what we eat or what we will wear because God will provide for us. Clearly though, this doesn't mean that we sit around and do nothing expecting for clothes to appear on our backs and food to appear in our stomachs. It simply means that we don't fill all of our time concerning ourselves is such things or becoming stressed out and worried about them. If that's the passage this person is using, then they totally missed the point.

And you're all right, the Dark Ages had nothing to do with weak Roman emperors, the end of the republic, native armies that had little loyalty to Rome, the plague, or poor leadership by the provincial princes who assumed power after Rome fell. It was all the church. And the church didn't do anything to provide for the basic needs of the people like food and medicine during these times either. yep, religion has always hindered and never helped human progress.
