I'm calling shenanigans on this but I guess it could be true.
ARTICLE
A census worker came by my house the other night while I was Skyping with my GF. Talked to him through the screen door and porch window. Told him I already sent in the form and he said they had a computer problem. I said that's not my problem. I was busy Skyping so all I told him was that one person lives here, I'm male and I was born in America so I'm a native American.
also... has anyone heard about census workers being hired and then fired/laid off and then rehired... multiple times just to boost the employment figures? If that's true I'm calling shenanigans on that too!

Not true, any of it.
I have a good buddy who is a contractor that is working with the Census Bureau. He literally works on hiring people for the Census and providing oversight on any hirings. He says all the myths are just myths and it is not as bad as people make it out to be.
I'd also add he is one of the most conservative people I know.

I'm still pissed that the Census job I had didn't work out.

someone posted a comment that better described what is going on:

The relevant language is at Title 13, Chapter 7, Subchapter II, § 223 of the US Code. The section prevents the owner or manger of “any hotel, apartment house, boarding or lodging house, tenement, or other building” from refusing to provide a list of the buildings occupants or providing access to “such premises”. This means a building’s owner or manger cannot refuse to let a census worker into or out of the building and cannot refuse to provide a list of occupants for the purpose of the census count. The penalty for refusal is $500. No where in the section does it authorize entry into individual apartments, lodgings, or “living quarters”.

It's just a very SMALL inconvenience to people and they make a mountain out of a mole hill about it.
On the same level as people being pissed about flight delays and shit--I understand why it's aggravating but they're doing their job, they're in business and you're the customer, they don't want delays either. But they don't want you to die on their airplane...

It's pretty simple... if you didn't want Census workers bothering you or your premises, fill the damn thing out when they send it.
If you choose to view it as a vast government conspiracy, I hope a census worker knocks at your door every 5 minutes for a month straight.

I moved right when the census came out, so i had 2 to fill out. I didn't do either because I honestly didn't know which one to do. I just waited for the guy to come out to the house. I wasn't home, so he left a piece of paper with his name and number. I called him back and we did it over the phone; took about 5 minutes. Not a big deal, but it does make a big difference.
