Spawned from another thread, I wanted to get the vibe of chatters in terms of US expectations heading into next month's World Cup. How do you think they'll do?

Best case scenario: win 1 game outside of group play.
Worst case scenario: fail to make it outside group play

Damnit, that's supposed to say "group stage". Help mods?

Pretty much agree with S&L, although best case scenario I think we can win 2 games after group play.

Realistically, I expect us to advance from group play and then lose our first game.

I have a feeling we're going to lose to Algeria in the last group play game and they'll advance over us on goal differential or some shit like that.

Highest expectations- win the world cup

lowest expectations- we don't win a single group stage game

So I'll ask everyone that voted quarterfinals, you would expect the US to beat Germany?

Did anyone expect US to beat Spain last summer who was the best team in the world?

I'll give you that, no one expected it. Just as no one expected the US to beat Portugal in the 2002 WC. We've pulled off the stunner before. But to go in expecting a victory against a top side is a bit more than I'm willing to do, especially with one of the key members of that Confed Cup team (Davies) out.

Unless they completely screw up, they should make it out of group play. however i hope they play like they did for the confederations cup and can make a run at the world cup.

Im not big on the German forwards and their midfield is gonna suffer without Ballack. I could see them going down in their first game out of group play, whoever it is.

Okay, and by that same logic, Germany's without Ballack, so I don't think it's that crazy to think we could beat Germany.

I think making it to the Quarters is about the best we could hope for from this team if they make if futher than that it will be a pretty successful WC for USA. If we don't make it out of the group stage than I'd say it will be a disapointment.

They'll get out of their group then lose the first game

Most realistic best expectation quarters. However I would be more than happy with making it out of the group stage and a strong showing against the Germans.

It's not that crazy but I'm not going in expecting it. Expectations, to me, are those things that need to be met to not consider the trip a failure. Would I consider the trip a failure if the US makes it out of the group stage but doesn't beat Germany? Nope.

Touche.

Expectations make watching sports miserable, at least for me, that's why I try and watch with as little expectation as possible so I don't get let down.

I'm like that with many of my teams. I got burned during the last WC by the US team when I went in with similar expectations to this year and they went down spectacularly in the first game. For whatever reason I like that I have expectations for the US team as opposed to just writing them off right away.

Don't follow soccer a whole lot, but I do get in to the World Cup. From what I know, I expect the U.S. to make it to the round of 16. I'd be disappointed with less, and happy with more.

Although, if they beat England in the 1st game, I'd find it so funny that I'd be happy regardless of what they did the rest of the way.

I feel the same. If the come out and get blasted, like they did at the start of the Confed Cup I'll be irate.

Honestly, a win over England would make me happy no matter what happens. I'll be disappointed if we don't make it out, but a win over England would be SWEEEEEET.

Best case: Beat or draw with England, make it out of group play - survive and advance as much as possible (I'd expect MAYBE 1 more win outside of group play)

Worst case: Get thrashed by England and eliminated in group play.
