I don't get out to the bars/clubs to see bands much these days. Who are some of the new bands/artists to look out for in Ohio? Any really good ones we have not heard of yet?

How many of you have heard of Downplay? I'm friends with their lead singer, they're on tour with Puddle of Mudd and Sevendust right now. Just signed a deal sometime in the last few months.

Downplay will be at Seven Fest this weekend, which is taking place about 5 miles SW of Athens this year.

Unfortunately, I have other plans already.

A band a few friends of mine are in had their music forwarded to Conan O'Brien's people, does that qualify as "up and coming?" For a comedy band with such little wherewithal and time, they're not too bad haha I really like "Planet Love."

Scotty Bratcher. From Middletown I think, buy play in Columbus quite a bit.

Back in my OSU/Columbus days, O.A.R. and Red Wanting Blue were the big Columbus bands. Obviously O.A.R. hit it big, but what ever happened to Red Wanting Blue? If my drunken memories serve me correctly, I saw them at OSU Springfest in the 90s (and maybe even at Victorys downtown, which I don't even know if it exists anymore) ...

Madison Square Gardeners - http://www.myspace.com/madisonsquaregardeners
They aren't actually from Columbus, but one of their members, Aaron Tasjan is and they are planning to play Columbus regularly.
Chelsea Automatic - http://www.myspace.com/chelseaautomatic
A regular on the Columbus college bar circuit they are quickly becoming one of Columbus's hottest local acts. They also were played SXSW last year. Below is a good writeup on the band. They also have a few music videos on YouTube.
http://614columbus.com/magazine/01-01-2010/chelsea-automatic
Jared Mahone - http://www.jaredmahone.com/
A guy raised on the west side of Columbus who tours mainly college campuses and coffee shops but regularly performs at local Columbus music bars and can frequently be seen making solo acoustic appearances at local open mic nights. His sounds is a soulful and funky mix of John Mayer, Matt Kearney, and Ben Folds.
He's also one of the best beat-boxers you'll ever see.
Left Hand Hold - http://www.myspace.com/lefthandhold
A new band out of Springfield playing mostly in the Springfield/Dayton area. Since they are so new they haven't played a ton and aren't super well know localy yet, but they did recently win a Battle of the Bands at the Hard Rock Cafe in Louisville, KY.

I saw RWB play twice in 03 or 04, I think. They played at Muskingum that year for Muskiepalooza. Really haven't heard much about them since then.BigAppleBuckeye wrote: Back in my OSU/Columbus days, O.A.R. and Red Wanting Blue were the big Columbus bands. Downplay has been touring with Puddle of Mudd and Sevendust for the last month or so and apparently that is going VERY well.

Not one of my favorites but one of the better quality live vids I found.

Red Wanting Blue is still around....stronger and probably better than they've ever been. Just cut a new album about a year ago and just signed a record deal a month or 2 back.BigAppleBuckeye wrote: Back in my OSU/Columbus days, O.A.R. and Red Wanting Blue were the big Columbus bands. I HIGHLY recommend going to see them again if you get the chance. Some of the faces have changed but they still play with the same passion and energy they always have.
6/4/2010 Friday Barley House Akron, OH
6/10/2010 Thursday Park Street Patio Festival Columbus, OH
6/27/2010 Sunday Old Harbor Inn Akron, OH
7/2/2010 Friday The Cove Geneva, OH
7/16/2010 Friday JB's Kent, OH
7/17/2010 Saturday Nino's Findlay, OH
7/29/2010 Thursday Hyatt on Capital Square Plaza Columbus, OH
7/30/2010 Friday Cedars Youngstown, OH
Those are just some of their upcoming Ohio dates.
Here's one of the better songs off their new album....

A New Definition.
Coldwater Ohio.
They play very hard and thrash metal........
Get some good gigs at the big venue in Ft Wayne Indiana, Pierrre's. They also won a Battle of the Bands in Ft Wayne Indiana. Prolly not as big as some of the others on here....wont make it mainstream..but they have been getting fairly big.

Couldn't be more spot on. While it's not one of their new songs...this one shows just how passionate these guys are for their music. The buildup throughout the song is incredible...and around the 3:50 mark the whole song boils over. Just simply amazing. And if you haven't seen them live...GO!Mooney44Cards wrote: Red Wanting Blue is still around....stronger and probably better than they've ever been. And Mooney...while US Bumpersticker is good...I still prefer this one...

By the way Mooney...watching those videos...it's amazing what the drummer change has done to the performance level of their shows.

Times New Viking, while they've already made it "big," are going to continue to make noise. They're from the Clintonville (Columbus) area.
