I would guess its just positioning in case we end up with the 4 superconferences that have been rumored.

Look at the crowd in the stands. Chief Osceola does the flaming spear right before kickoff. They were giving away tix last year, can't even sellout a home game vs. Miami. They had a chance to join the SEC way back when but chose the ACC because it was easier, Bobby said it himself.

Don't you think 12 is enough for the SEC ? I'm hearing the deal as is would not necessarily get better if they got bigger. I don't know about the other superconferences. Seems like football people are speaking for all other sports without thinking too.

How would this SEC look? Four, 5-team divisions, the top 4 teams play 2 SEC-CG's for 2 BCS spots with a 3rd at-large spot available to either of the division winners who lose the SEC CG or for another at-large who isn't a division winner.

Each team plays 9 SEC games, 4 games against their division and one of the other divisions on a rotating basis.

Arkansas

Alabama
Auburn
Mississippi
Mississippi State
Louisiana State

East
Miami
Florida
Florida State
South Carolina

The North, because of Vandy and Kentucky is the weakest division of that alignment

I'd agree. However, one will always be the weakest in that group. You can't argue that it would be amazing drama every year though. What matchups that might create.

They would make the jump for one reason: $$$$$$

SEC TV deal > The ACC TV deal (by a mile)

FSU playing Florida, Georgia, Alabama would sell out Doak Walker. Nobody cares to watch FSU play Boston College or Wake Forest.

Even if the SEC didn't expand, there's the unlikely chance Arkansas heads back (sort of) to the Big 12 after they lose schools, which would make room for FSU.

20 schools in a league is far, far too big and unwieldy.

Not gonna happen.

Plus, nobody is going to agree to allowing a mini playoff inside a conference before teams are then selected for the BCS.

Finally, no conference is going to get more than one BCS slot just for positioning.

When all this shakes out, I think we'll be seeing maybe four or five super conferences with an average of 16 schools in each. That will be far more "playoff friendly" for all concerned, should the BCS eventually decide to go in that direction.

you're right, you would have some great matchups every year, it would just suck knowing that's pretty much a 3 team division in football year in and year out
