I didn't know if this belonged in the sports forum or not, but World Cup time is coming up, and I thought we should mention the bids for the 2018/2022 WC were turned into FIFA today. The U.S. turned in a bid for both WCs that includes the maximum of 18 stadiums with an average capacity of 76,000.

Here is the list of cities and stadiums that were submitted. The prevailing thinking is that England will get 2018 and the U.S. and Australia are the main competitors for 2022.

It would be so cool to get a WC here. I'd love to watch one in person.

I went to a World Cup game in Detroit when it was here last. I despise soccer, but it was pretty sweet.

Wow, someone who doesn't like soccer managed to not be a jackass in a soccer thread.

Congrats on that world first ernest!

No Chicago? That is really, really stupid. That would be like Germany hosting in 2006 without playing games in Munich

You said you don't like soccer and yet you actually contributed a relevant response to the thread.

Usually people who don't like soccer tend to respond with wonderful posts like "Soccer is for teh gays!!! lol" and "why don't you play real football".

How do you figure? Munich is a much more important city to Germany than Chicago is to the US.

LOL... OOOOOOH. Let me rephrase. I despise watching soccer, but playing it is a decent workout.

Seems pretty typical that Indianapolis would get the closest bid to us.

Not really. Chicago is one of the economic engines of the country, has the third highest population, is the third largest media market, and has a proven and demonstrated history of turning out a lot of people for soccer events. Not having Chicago among the venue cities in favor Nashville, San Diego or Indianapolis is a huge oversight and will probably wind up sinking the bid.

Wasn't the qualifier against Honduras in Chicago and wasn't that game filled with Honduras supporters rather than USA supporters?

^ Yes it was.

A World Cup here would be awesome. A trip to Australia would be pretty sweet too though. I'll be 33 for the 2022 Cup, hopefully I'll have the income by that point to hit up a few games for it regardless of location.

I went to a Russia-Sweden game in the Metrodome (I believe) as a kid. Was way too small to appreciate the significance. Did talk some trash to some Russians though!!!

I heard that 2018 is probably going to Europe, and 2022 is our best bet.

This would be beyond awesome. Personally I love playing soccer, but I hate watching an entire game though unless it's international competition of something in Europe. The World Cup is one of the greatest athletic events in the world, this would be neat as fuck.

Oh and I'm a huge football guy too, and was very good at it. Americans that disrespect soccer though are classless idiots though in my opinion. Billions of people love it, it can't be that bad.

Yes, Russia/Sweden was the game I went to. I think. I know Sweden was one of the teams.
