Butler, Michigan State and West Virginia are not just winning games, they’re making the grades, too.
The NCAA said three Final Four participants, Butler, Michigan State and West Virginia, are among the top 10 percent of men’s basketball teams in the latest Academic Progress Rate rankings. The APR is a measure of how student-athletes perform in the classroom.
Oklahoma was the only women’s Final Four team to make the list.
Duke and Connecticut, the two national champions last season, did not make the cut. Neither did Alabama or Texas, which played for football’s national championship.

This is not a slam at Duke, as I am sure Duke does great in the classroom. I just found it interesting that the other 3 schools in the Final Four performed so well in the classroom.

"Scores are calculated based on data from the fall semester in 2005 through the spring semester in 2009. Each athlete receives one point per semester for remaining academically eligible and another point each semester for remaining at that school or graduating."

At Duke every sport (with the exception of men's basketball and fencing) achieved 90-100% percentile rankings in the APR. Basketball achieved an 80-90 percent ranking and men's fencing garnered a 60-70% ranking

Like I said, this isn't about duke. It is about the scores posted by the other schools in the Final Four.

Anytime Duke and an insinuation that their academic standard isn't up to that of their peers is made, it demands explanation. That is what I was providing. It wasn't about Duke, but mentioning two of the four final four teams and academic excellence and none of those were Duke, there must be an explanation.

How is fencing such a time consuming activity? I'd get rid of the sport if they are going to have such horrible grades.

It wasn't the grades that got the fencing team such a 40-60% rating, it was the the transfer numbers and the fact two participants took a leave from duke to train for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

As for Prescott and him thinking that I am some obsessive Duke fan,

The News and Observer had the same article last week and headlined it "Devils don't win this title".
This story has been something Carolina and other fans in the triangle have hammered Duke on the last week.
It demanded defense when the N&O headlined it, and I was refuting it too.

Sleeper, I'm betting only in your wildest wet dream could you have made it into Duke, and thus settled on OSU.

I definitely did not have the grades to get into Duke; I'l be the first to admit that. But if I would have, Duke would have been right there with Princeton, Stanford and the like as my choices.

That said, you are only continuing your stupid act, which is tiresome.

Why must everyone focus on the school that isn't on the list?? Why not give deserved kudos to Michigan State, Butler, and West Virginia?? I , for one, never imagined that West Virginia would have performed so well in the classroom. Of course, Belein deserves some of that credit.

Please show me where I defamed Duke? Duke is a fine school and I am sure they do a great job in the classroom with their student athletes.

Most definitely hats off to coach Lickliter and Stevens, Belein and Huggins, and coach Izzo

As for why everyone focuses on the team not mentioned, I think it is just because it is Duke and the article is linked to academics. Down here, much is done to tear down the stereotype about academic quality and the Duke athletics. Carolina fans feel as if the academic standards of the university are disregarded when it comes to the basketball team, and anytime information like this comes out it turns into a bash session to make Coach K look like Calipari.

We all see through your motives Prescott, it isnt paranoia. Your track record serves as legitimacy for any action done to defend Duke University, its athletic program, and more importantly its academic record.

You may claim that your thread creation in this case was done specifically to bring attention to the successes of the programs mentioned, but the sheer number of posts you have made in the past that have sought to bring Duke University to the gutter have implicated this thread as being another attempt to do so.

Call it paranoia, but it is a track record of actions that has solicited this response.

however it was titled

"Interesting fact about the Final Four"

What perchance was that interesting fact? How about the insinuation that Duke's academic record in regards to its basketball program and the rest of the university falls short. Even universities such as Michigan State, Butler, and WVU have better academic successes from basketball players than Duke.

This is the last I will write on this. I sincerely hope no one looks at the APR and determines by that alone should a program be measured. Factors are put into the APR that hinder programs plagued by transfer and early departure. These factors can detract from programs that otherwise have sterling academic reputations. For instance, due to Gordon Hayward's entrance into the NBA, Butler's APR rating will fall. Kid could be a 4.0 and will continue core classes while playing in NBA (ala Vince Carter, Antawn Jamison) but it will not show on the APR rating.

Most reasonable people understand that rankings like these are based on some factors that coaches and schools can't control.This means that rankings like these have little meaning.


Don't be so defensive. Duke's academic reputation is not tarnished because they were ranked below MSU, Butler, and West Virginia.
