.. shortly after you just started and develped some sort of game to shoot in the mid 40's low 50's for 9? You could compete with the average golfer but you expected a bad shot and were ok with it. Didn't worry about hand positioning and wrist cock and cupping wrists and all that stupid shit. I'm not convinced theres any benefit of being good at golf with handicaps.

Yes, because now I get pissed at bad shots. I liked making my day with a few great shots instead of ruining my day with a few bad ones.

plus, like you said, handicaps make it impossible for me to beat people. I usually have to play insanely good to beat someone who gets a stroke on 80% of the holes.

Ya.. back then when you were done you thought about the nice drive you had, or the par you made or the tee shot on a par 3 you stuck and didnt worry about shooting a 45. Now you shoot a 37 and think about how many fairways you missed and putts you missed low or pushed an approach and missed the green.. u don't think abotu the 7 or 8 pars you had.. just the missed birdie attempts and shots you blew away. People who shoot mid 40's seem to enjoy golf a whole lot more.

I enjoy golf much more on business scrambles where doors prizes, food and beer is free and plentiful.

I agree with the sentiment of the thread.

I'm a 45-48 type golfer and I typically come off the course having fun thinking about that one "great" hole or something.

At one point years ago I played enough where I was shooting around 40 and would typically come off upset at the bad shots rather than happy about the good ones.

I like it when I play well. What can I say, I'm a real competitor and the lower I go the happier I am. I've learned to manage my frustrations to try not to let one bad one completely ruin a hole or 1 or 2 after

I like it when I can play as few holes as I want (usually 5 or 6, depends on when I start sucking) and then drive the cart for my husband.

Golf is more fun to me when i am hitting the ball well. Its because i know i can now. After you break 80 and start shooting in the 70s you get pissed when you shoot a 38, when it used to be i would have LOVED to shoot a 38. To me its just as enjoyable to me because its just a game.

Oh yeah this makes it better too

I enjoy golf more now that I'm good at it. It was too frustrating when I was shooting in the high 40's and low 50's. Still frustrating, but at least now I have the skill level to know I should shoot a certain score on a certain course. I also enjoy scrambles the best, plus it's fun gratifying when you can shoot in the 70's and still be pissed off.

No... I love the challenge of trying to better my ability.... and getting the red-ass when I do not preform up to my ability.

Well the main thing is you'll never be good enough at golf. I find that average golfers come to grips with this fact a lot easier than single digit handicaps and scratch golfers. I played 18 on Sunday and had 3 birdies on the front.. I had 2 bogeys too. I was so pissed off at how I played in spite of playing 1 under and scoring 3 birds. If 10 years ago you'd have told me I would shoot a 35 with 3 birds and be pissed about it, I would have told u you're fuckin crazy. That's why I think the game gets less enjoyable the better you get.

Hopefully, one does not ever lose that fire to get better at golf. If one does... one loses that competitive edge that it takes to get to the next level. Two options:
1 - Grind it out and put forth the time and effort to improve steadily. (Especially the short game.)
2 - Accept that fact one is not going to improve much, be inconsistent, and just enjoy golf for the beauty, the fellowship, and the coldies.

Whatever one chooses... simply have fun playing!!
