I thought it was a really well done documentary.

I always knew Ricky was a little out there...but I was glad to see how he had come around and started settling his life down. It was also good to hear that he is now in his kids' lives and being a father instead of being a piece of shit.

I don't buy that he is "recovered" (if in fact he has a mental illness). I say give it some time and he will do something stupid again.

That being said...the film itself was well done.

I thought it was decent. Kinda like the McVey Tapes... It revealed a lot about a man who I felt there were a ton of questions surrounding, but presented just as many new questions as it answered. Here is what I took away from Run Ricky Run:
  • The man is incredibly smart
  • The guy is addicted to marijuana
  • Because he is addicted to marijuana he is incredibly dumb
  • He is extremely humble
  • And like all the other messed up people in this world, he had a rough upbringing

I found it to be very interesting and very well done. I don't feel that Ricky is dumb at all. In fact he appears to be really smart. He's troubled, but he's smart. Marijuana is illegal and I've never smoked it... but if the worst thing he's done is smoking some reefer, I'd say that he's half all right if you ask me.

ricky williams may be "addicted" to marijuana. but he is not dumb. kid's gone through a lot of shit. i think he's turned out alright given the circumstances.

Ricky was always one of my favorites, and his own story reflects the hypocrisy of the media as a whole.

A couple times a year, we hear about an ex-pro athlete having some type of financial trouble, and the high horsers of the world criticize the single-minded nature of most athletes to get to where they end up. But when Ricky was active and had other interests outside of football, he was derided as a screwball who wasn't committed enough. Apparently there's some type of middle ground that only the truly elite among us can possibly recognize and properly oversee.

You gotta be dumb to keep smoking the reefer when you are as highly regarded as he is and you KNOW you are going to be tested. If you want to smoke your Mary-Jane's then fine. Go do it on your own time (which he did). But choosing to be a "burnout" isn't necessarily the "brightest" idea one ever had.

What I want to know is who was buying/growing this marijuana for him? How was he getting it? Was he purchasing it himself? Was he smart enough to at least have someone else purchase/grow it for him so that if there ever was a "bust" his name was not attached to it?

well i mean, florida is a little different than ohio, but there are rarely stings on personal use bags of marijuana.

im pretty sure a cop would get laughed at if he was like "Man i just nabbed this stoner with 3.5g on him".

(Let it be pointed out that I'm paraphrasing to the best of my memory)

"When would it be ok for me to stop playing football? After my knees are gone? After my third concussion? When is it socially ok for me to walk away from the game?

I watched it earlier in the weekend or last week some time. It was pretty neat. Ricky seems really down-to-earth at times, and really wacko at times.

Ricky Williams is an incredibly intelligent person. His intelligence and personality defies typecasting, but he has been typecast by the media. the film did a great job of showing arguably the most misunderstood athlete of this generation as he is, not the story line that has been dictated to the public.

Why? Because you say so? Because he lost out on some money? Obviously he doesn't value money as much as some people.

People think athletes owe them shit, when in reality, they don't. Ricky did as Ricky pleased and he's a better man for it.

I've always liked Ricky. This documentary just reaffirmed that.

Well said. I was getting half-mad at the one reporter (old guy that I've seen on TV before) that was asking Ricky these stupid questions, and Ricky was getting aggrivated w/ him, and rightfully so.

I don't think anyone has a problem with Ricky Williams walking away from the game...

... people have problems with Ricky walking away from the game to go smoke dope.

See my post above for your second comment.

As for the "Why?" because as pious as Ricky might think he is, there is nothing virtuous about wasting one's talents to sit around burn one's intelligence.

Ricky even said it himself at the end of the film, he realizes that playing football is the best way for him to use his God-given talents. Playing football, while trivial as it may be, does more good for others than one man quakering himself away and smoking dope. No one benefits from Ricky smoking dope other than maybe Ricky. If Ricky truly wants to help others like he hinted at by his time spent meditating with others, practicing holistic medicine, etc., then smoking marijuana is NOT the answer.

It's not an issue of people thinking Ricky owes them a damn thing. It's an issue of Ricky wanted to help others - e.g., why he started practicing holistic medicine, etc.. But this is not what Ricky's talents are tailored for. Ricky's talents are tailored to putting on an unbelievable show for all to enjoy. And he got this message if you paid attention to the end of the flick.

Williams walked away because his body was destroyed having the Wanstache run him into the ground. He walked away to get his body right, and he would have been smoking weed regardless. In the NFL or out.

I know alot of very successful people that smoke weed and they seem to function just fine. to call them burn outs or pot heads to me is pretty dumb. as long as it dont affect his family or other people then what is the problem with it. he seems to have a good grip on his life and as far a the medicine hes practicing i for one believe you have to smoke to accept some of their cures lol
