How do you stop your dog from digging holes in your yard? I know that you have to catch them in the act, but even then, it is not working. I sprayed some pesticide where he was digging, and that didn't work. Spanked him, then tied him up. That didn't work. Still digging. What are some good tricks?

Dogs dig because they are bored. Provide exercise and some toys to entertain him.

He has plenty of toys and a big back yard. He is digging in one spot in particular, along the fence line. Like he's going after a smell. How do you let your dog recognize that digging is a bad thing?

You will never make a dog recognize that digging is a bad thing. If you find a way, let me know. LOL If he's a pup, he may eventually stop doing it. Mine has started digging less finally at a year old. If the dog is doing at the fence, it may be trying to get under the fence to something on the other side.

He may be digging for ground moles. My back yard is infested with the little varments. My dog picks up their vibration and starts digging.

Bury his dog poop where he is digging. That stops them from digging there.

^^^^ This could be the cause too. Not poop, the moles !

Might try burying the dog poop! He may eat it though.
He's a puggle, two years old. He digs here and there. Just don't want him to do it at the fence row. If he doesn't learn, I am just going to have to put in an underground electric fence. I guess it's not the actual digging that pisses me off, but where he's doing it.

Get him a sandbox and bury toys in it. It will be much more fun to dig there.

If it is definately in the same spot....bury some chicken wire in the hole that he is digging enough that it is covered by the soil and secured by landscape stakes or pins to hold it there. It should discourage him. I know people that install this in their flower beds around the house and cover it up with mulch to deter a digging dog. Worth a shot if you've tried everything else.

Bury broken glass along the fence line. Once they cut their paws, they'll quit digging.

Simple solution:
Buy or build a Kennel cost about $180.00 (do it your self)

for the fencing/poles (can use wood) I like metal poles another $50.00 for railroad ties, few buck for chicken wire or metal yard fencing to lay on the ground (stop the dog from digging can't dig throw metal fenceing add some gravel on top ..easy clean up and ever time it rains it clean and washes the pee into the ground. total cost $250.00 plus
Note: great for the summer (leave the dog out all day) when you want to go some place for the week-end day trip no probel put dog in kennel give food and water and forget about it.

Did this in my backyard...worked well. She caught her nails in the wire, yelped, and stopped digging there. She did however move onto a new spot that didn't have chicken wire layed down. I have noticed though, now that its getting warmer out and we've been going on more walks, she's not digging as much...may just be coincidence though.VikingFan wrote: If it is definately in the same spot....bury some chicken wire in the hole that he is digging enough that it is covered by the soil and secured by landscape stakes or pins to hold it there. As pepperpot mentioned, most dogs dig b/c they are bored and full of energy. The walking is wearing him down to where she doesn't feel like digging as much.Benny The Jet wrote: now that its getting warmer out and we've been going on more walks, she's not digging as much...may just be coincidence though.

They'll never dig another hole after finding the first one.
