UC held its Spring Game (aka Bearcat Bowl) last night. It was the first look at the Cats with Butch Jones at the helm, and the team did not disappoint. Looks like the Bearcats will be putting up lots of points again this year. Zac Collaros shined, going 18-20 with 218 yards and two TDs. The WR corps is downright nasty, DJ Woods Kembrell Thompkins and Vidal Hazelton shined. This WR corps is about 5-6 players deep and will cause major headaches for opposing defensive coordinators. Isiah Pead did not play due to a minor knee injury, but Sophomore Darrin Williams looked great running the ball. He is very explosive hitting the holes and with his small stature, reminds me of a Jacquizz Rogers type of running back.
The defense still has room to grow. However, this group is really young and I can see a lot of development in Derek Wolfe and Walter Stewart. Stewart, a Sophomore, has gained about 15-20 pounds of muscle in the offseason and I expect he will be playing on Sundays in a few years. With his frame I would not be surprised to see him add another 10-15 pounds before the season starts as well.
