Not a shock at all. I think Swarbrick has said that it would take a huge overhaul of the college landscape to get them to even consider joining a conference. The Big 10 adding a team or two to set up a lucrative conference championship game doesn't hold the same weight that many think it does.

Will UM, Purdue & MSU still be able to schedule ND with the expansion?
If not, they will be left with USC, military and a couple Big East schools.

The BCS has dramatically altered the landscape, but the "ND" exemption for the conference of one has rendered them immune to the effects of it. Should that ever be changed (don't think it can't--keep losing and it could change very easily) ND would find themselves in a real bind.

They'd finish in the 10-12 range every year if they joined.

Good the Big Ten does not need another below average team.

This.
.....this is where I trot out my semiannual "ND is irrelevant in the current landscape of college football" quote and get the domers all inflammed.

What exemption? They have to meet certain criteria to get in to a BCS Bowl Game:

No other team is automatically qualified for a BCS game for finishing in the top 8. That's an exemption.

Let me begin by saying this, I hate Notre Dame. Now, you say no other team gets the automatic bid if they finish in the top 8, I say all mid majors do. You would be very hard pressed to find a mid major that finishes that high in the BCS that doesn't win their conference. Mid majors, get penalized as soon as they lose. They will drop very quickly. I think other mid majors have a advantage over Notre Dame; if they win their conference and finish in the top 12, they are in.

That being said, I also hate the BCS.

BCS memeber conference champions are automatically qualified. Don't you think that a conference champion who automatically gets a BCS bid would be ranked in the top 8? More times than not, that has been the case. If anything, it could be viewed as a slight disadvantage for ND because there has been cases over the years where a mediocre Big East or ACC team has won the conference and not finished with a top 8 final ranking.

The Big 10 hardly needs Notre Dame. Hell Notre Dame may not need a conference, they need a miracle.

^^^^Keep telling yourself that. If that's the case, why does the Big 10 keep approaching them? The Big 10 needs ND more than ND will EVER need the Big 10.

I wouldn't be so certain of that. I think you're relying on the NBC contract being there forever, it could go by the wayside in a flash if ND continues down the trail of mediocrity. If that happens (I kinda don't think they will btw) they would certainly need the exposure of a national spotlight, and a conference affililation would be what they NEED. Not necessarily the Big 10.

I just wouldn't rest assured that all would be well in domerland should the losing continue, after all, you never would have guessed it could have lasted as long as it has.

ND's ratings on NBC remain good and they have extended that contract multiple times, all duing a down period in the programs history. ND could survive without that NBC contract, they generate much more money through their registered trademark than anything else. ND doesn't need a conference, they have and will continue to have the largest fanbase in all of college football long after you and I have left this Earth. Look at past history, ND has gone through stretches like this before and the fans bever abandomed them and it's not going to happen now. BTW, ND does all this with out any major corporate sponsorship money.........when you go to South Bend you don't see huge corporate ads splashed all over the place like other schools, heck, they don't even have a jumbo-tron in the stadium.

Didn't we already talk about Ohio State's and Notre Dame's comparable bowl woes?

can't ohio state and notre dame fans come to the realization that the two programs have a similar curse/ that they are a great bowl draw because their fans travel anywhere? (probably because we are stuck in the midwest and want to gtfo in december/january?) both groups of fans spend a ton of money wherever their school happens to be playing, so both teams oftentimes get put into bowl games where they might be outmatched, because the bowl would rather have the team that has the biggest economic influence rather than the best matchup...

Are you kidding? It happens all the time with the ACC/Big East champion. Or when there's an upset in a conference championship game.

How about when two mid majors are ranked in the top 8-10 and only one gets to go to a BCS game? I bet Boise State wished they had the Notre Dame clause in 2008.

My point still remains that no singular team has its own BCS clause other than Notre Dame. You have clauses for conference champs and mid major at large bids but no singular clause.

^^^^^No one else has a clause because they're in a conference! No, it doesn't happen all the time with the Big East and ACC, case in point is Cincy last year. Too bad for Boise St, where were they when all these deals were hashed out?

Don't argue with ND fans, laugh at them. 6-6(6-7) with inevitable bowl loss is all you need to know about ND football.
