The BCS has dramatically altered the landscape, but the "ND" exemption for the conference of one has rendered them immune to the effects of it. Should that ever be changed (don't think it can't--keep losing and it could change very easily) ND would find themselves in a real bind.karen lotz wrote: Not a shock at all. I think Swarbrick has said that it would take a huge overhaul of the college landscape to get them to even consider joining a conference. The Big 10 adding a team or two to set up a lucrative conference championship game doesn't hold the same weight that many think it does.

What exemption? They have to meet certain criteria to get in to a BCS Bowl Game:ytownfootball wrote: The BCS has dramatically altered the landscape, but the "ND" exemption for the conference of one has rendered them immune to the effects of it. No other team is automatically qualified for a BCS game for finishing in the top 8. That's an exemption.rock_knutne wrote:What exemption? Let me begin by saying this, I hate Notre Dame. Now, you say no other team gets the automatic bid if they finish in the top 8, I say all mid majors do. You would be very hard pressed to find a mid major that finishes that high in the BCS that doesn't win their conference. Mid majors, get penalized as soon as they lose. They will drop very quickly. I think other mid majors have a advantage over Notre Dame; if they win their conference and finish in the top 12, they are in.krazie45 wrote:No other team is automatically qualified for a BCS game for finishing in the top 8. BCS memeber conference champions are automatically qualified. Don't you think that a conference champion who automatically gets a BCS bid would be ranked in the top 8? More times than not, that has been the case. If anything, it could be viewed as a slight disadvantage for ND because there has been cases over the years where a mediocre Big East or ACC team has won the conference and not finished with a top 8 final ranking.krazie45 wrote:No other team is automatically qualified for a BCS game for finishing in the top 8. The Big 10 hardly needs Notre Dame. Hell Notre Dame may not need a conference, they need a miracle.rock_knutne wrote: ND doesn't need the Big 10, they need ND!
I wouldn't be so certain of that. I think you're relying on the NBC contract being there forever, it could go by the wayside in a flash if ND continues down the trail of mediocrity. If that happens (I kinda don't think they will btw) they would certainly need the exposure of a national spotlight, and a conference affililation would be what they NEED. Not necessarily the Big 10.rock_knutne wrote: ^^^^Keep telling yourself that. If that's the case, why does the Big 10 keep approaching them? The Big 10 needs ND more than ND will EVER need the Big 10.
can't ohio state and notre dame fans come to the realization that the two programs have a similar curse/ that they are a great bowl draw because their fans travel anywhere? (probably because we are stuck in the midwest and want to gtfo in december/january?) both groups of fans spend a ton of money wherever their school happens to be playing, so both teams oftentimes get put into bowl games where they might be outmatched, because the bowl would rather have the team that has the biggest economic influence rather than the best matchup...sjmvsfscs08 wrote: Didn't we already talk about Ohio State's and Notre Dame's comparable bowl woes?
Are you kidding? It happens all the time with the ACC/Big East champion. Or when there's an upset in a conference championship game.rock_knutne wrote:BCS memeber conference champions are automatically qualified.
