My brother and I were heading back from looking at some property in western Wayne county. We were heading east on RT 250 just outside of Applecreek when we saw a couple of Amish men, that from a distance appeared to be sitting right on the edge of the road. Our first thought was WTF??? Who would be sitting so close to a major state highway?
As we passed them we noticed they had no legs. We saw their legless pants laying to their sides. They were at an intersection where a township road crosses RT 250. We then realized they were fixing to paw it across RT 250. I have pulled out of that intersection before and their is a knob in the road and you have to gun it when turning onto RT 250.
Their are "low" Amish sects in this area that do not even allow indoor plumbing nor any reflective devices on their black buggies. When traveling at night they rely on a single dim lantern that sits on the side of their buggy. I have passed them many times on dark foggy nights on RT 250. We have many Amish relatives and grew up in the area so we are quite familiar with the Amish community. We figured their sect does not allow them any worldly conveniences such as wheelchairs.
Most Amish are not like this and are good people. But as in all communities you have idiots.
