This seems to be the prevailing attitude. I am not a member of the Tea Party, but don't those people have the right to disagree without being labeled a racist, being called unpatriotic,and accused of using language which will incite violence?

Hillary Clinton screached at the top of her lungs it's the patriotic thing to do....disagree with an administration. She said this while running for the democrat nomination.

Her words ring so true, but the left can't stand to hear it now.

Agreed, but I think it's important to point out that not every liberal assumes tea party members are racists, right-winged nutjobs.

Of course there are the minority loonies protesting. They are easier to call out because they usually have some vulgar sign that makes for a good story. But, even though I question the motives of some "newer" tea party members, I believe overall that the tea parties are a good thing for America.

I agree, this IS patriotic... I just find it funny because the shoe is on the other foot.

Dissent is acceptable from anyone.
All protesters/dissenters have been called "unpatriotic" by both sides. It's always incorrect, but it is always the first place people go because it's easier than actually thinking of a reasonable rebuttal.

If you dissented against the war you were unpatriotic, now you are for being in the Tea Party.

The Tea Party are well within their rights, obviously... but people often see the outspoken whack jobs on TV (every group has one, that's just the way it is). The whack jobs will always get shown because they make for the best TV, regardless of party/reason/etc. Is everyone out there an insane racist? No, but the few that are are quite entertaining and make for good ratings.

Also, it's hard for people to separate it from right-wingers, because such a high percentage of the speakers/famous faces that have been tied to the movement lean WAY right. Sure, there are people of all sorts out there, but the heavy hitters in politics and entertainment championing the cause give it a right lean. The Tea party in my home county lists right on their page that I need to listen to Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity. How will some people not assume that to be right leaning? They could at least say listen to Traficant (Independent) on the weekends on Cleveland radio.

How I see it is the people on the right railed against the rallies from the left and now the people on the left on railing against the rallies from the right. One and the same to me. The right is pretty much the left circa 2003-2007

It has nothing to do with ratings. It has everything with dismissing these people because they question some government policies.

Republicans are allowed to argue that dissent is unpatriotic, but as soon as it's not their President in office, it's okay.

Democrats are doing nothing more than holding Republicans to their own standard.

Dissent is fine, but when the people yelling for eight years that it's not start to dissent, it's hypocrisy.

Like IWP said, it's both sides. If a D is in office, Rs bitch. If an R is in office, the Ds bitch. Regardless of who is in the White House, 50% of the country will be bitching. This goes for who has control of Congress as well.

Obviously this is the case, then there are a few things that have magnified it.

1. Internet: Most of this discussion used to just take place between friends, or maybe a small group of drunken guys arguing (and ignoring one another too) at a private club. With message boards, social networking, etc. the amount of dissent that is visible has increased, and so have the number of contributors.

2. Uninformed voters: It's great that the last election got more people involved, but unfortunately those who got involved are generally clueless to the world (and this is true on all parts of the spectrum). Couple this with all of the ways to express how ignorant you are (see: internet), and it just gets ugly.

With all of this, most discussion (real life or message boards or Facebook) regardless of how well meaning it may be, unfortunately ends up evolving into a substanceless, partisan bitchfest instead of healthy discussion. It's just the world we currently live in.
