I was going to post this and forgot. Kudos to Brian Davis. He did still win 620K but didnt get the Major exemptions he would have received.

Definitely an honorable thing to do, but for those that didn't see Davis had maybe 40ft for par before the penalty and Furyk had about 5ft. The penalty probably didn't matter.

haha Furyk should have purposely missed his putts so they could remained tied and played another hole.

so what was the penalty, during his backswing he hit something with his club?

Totally stupid rule. It had no effect on his shot at all. This is one of the things I don't like about golf.

Sportsmanship is one thing ( the "rule" he broke didnt effect the shot at all btw) but this is just pure stupidity to call that on yourself.

In today's world, with all of the cameras out on the course, had he not called it and won there would have been a huge fuss made over it.

The rule is stupid, but it would have been a clusterfuck of epic proportions had he won then, someone comes back to that on the video (because it obviously broke the rule, albeit a stupid rule).

He touched something( a twig) in a hazard with his backswing.

i just saw the video. it wasnt even really a twig, more like a piece of straw. basically had the same effect as his club nipping a tall blade of grass.

Whatever it was, he felt it was enough to call a penalty on himself and TV replays confirmed it. It sucks for Davis, but nice to see Jim win. He truly is one of the good guys in the sport and if roles were reversed I am sure he would have done the same thing.

It was nice of him to do that, but it wouldn't have mattered anyways. He knew he had no chance so it made him look like the "hero" when in all reality it was his second shot into 18 that lost him the golf tournament.

I don't think it was stupid of him to call the penalty on himself. Whether it effected the outcome or not, it was the right thing to do. They say golf is a game of etiquette. It's about time we actually saw a little civility and class in action.

yeah, i think i agree with what they said on PTI. the PGA should reward him and give him the exemption to the tournament he would have had if he won.
