Crying about her kids having dial-up internet!!

What a freaking cry baby! What the hell would this lady have done 10, 15 years ago? Imagine what our grandparents would think of this.

Hey lady, take your kids to a library to find there info, or have them open a book or an encyclopedia.

I see broadband more of a basic technological need for any advanced society. The availability of broadband and wireless in Asia and Europe is amazing in comparison to the U.S.

This is a more technological world, and if the U.S. does not want to fall further behind in technology, math and science, broadband needs to be included nearly everywhere in the U.S.

She is framing the argument incorrectly as well.

Love the drawl! Hate the speech. She's got a little bit of a point, but two months ago, she got broadband. Let someone still with dial-up make the argument she's trying to make. I don't want to kick her though. I just closed the link instead.

While it may be played up a bit in speeches like the one you linked our "it'll get there when it gets there" approach towards high speed internet access in this country is worrisome. It's one of those things that us being the "greatest nation on earth" should at least be able to remain competitive at but we aren't even close.

I'm sure the people of Haiti (and other places) can feel her pain as they struggle to find out where their next meal is coming from.

This country is massive. You can't even get reliable cell phone service everywhere in the country, let alone broadband internet. The costs would be outrageous.

Actually she has some really good points. Albeit she is overdramatic, I have three options where I live. One is dial up, two is internet by satellite, three is a wireless service which wants $900, yes $900 to install. The satallite provider is also about $90 a month. With outrageous prices like that, the only affordable option is dial up, but if anyone has ever had to take a test online, dialup can be a huge issue, especially with things such as video links and time limits. I went with the fourth option, which is no internet. I use my phone to surf, but in the rural area I live in, service is often an issue.

Are you okay with us just giving up and not even trying to remain competitive?

This lady is over the top but the cause she stands for is still valid. We drastically need to step up our investments in our telecommunications infrastructure before we get left in the dust.

what options did her son have at school? what about the library? just because this lady didnt have it in her own home doesnt mean she didnt have access. why would her son's school assign homework that none of the students could do?
