Could be true. They have had some good recruiting classes.
However, better athletes does not always mean a great team especially on defense where if you have a player go rogue and not play his assignment, you will get burned.

They had, statistically, one of the best defenses in the country last year. I don't know about top 5, but they are a top 15 team IMO.

Va Tech will always be in the running for the ACC crown along with a talented Miami team.
While UNC may be tough, I don't know if they have the total package to make a big run.

Yeah, to be successful in the media buz guys like Herbie and Spielman cannot continually praise OSU.
Although UNC's defense is good, I'll still take OSU's defense any day of the week.

UNC definitely has a very good defense.. Seriously, check out their stats from a year ago.. I believe they were VERY young on D and returned every starter? Maybe lost 1 or 2, but I know they returned quite a bit.
I wouldn't say they're top 5 based on a spring game, I'm not real sure how the offense will fare either...
Could they have a better overall defense than OSU? Sure.. But they DON'T have a better overall team.
I'd say UNC, from what I know based on what they returned/how they fared last season would be a top 15 team.. Maybe 10th at BEST.

UNC very well could have a better D that Ohio State, but since the comment came from Spielman I wouldn't put much stock in it. He's known to say moronic things all the time.

I think that with Butch Davis at the helm, and with them playing in the ACC, you can't discount them being a potential top 10 team every year. The past two years they were on the verge of being a 9-3/10-2 team but would shoot themselves in the foot against teams they should have beat.

Only watched probably 2 of their games they played last year(including the bowl game) but i thought they had a halfway decent defense. From the College Football Live team on ESPN, who covered their spring game a little bit last night, sounds like they have a TON of strides to make ofensively

UNC will be a pretty solid team. Hopefully, they aren't one of the handful of teams the country goes nuts about after the first two weeks, then watches them drop 3 games later in the year. Sorta of like Miami last year.

They aren't a top 5 team, but they might have a top 5 defense. Marvin Austin, Deunta Williams, and Bruce Carter are all studs. They return 19 or 20 starters in total from last year.
I would say 9 or 10 wins should be expected this year. The LSU game should be a good one.

Caronlina was supposed to break through last year too. I'll believe it when I see it. I respect Spielman and his knowledge of the game as much as anyone. But its spring ball vs your own teammates. And at this level, everyone passes the eye test. Do it on the field and make us believers.
