Of course over the counter drugs have an affect on your body/brain. Think about how you may feel after you take them. Heck some even warn against operating machinery and such because guess what it impairs your judgment, reaction time, makes you drowsy, etc.....

Which is the same thing that happens with alcohol (and pot) so why do we just slap a "hey don't drive" label on alcohol/medications and yet make using marijuana a crime?

Doesn't make sense.

I've been in a police station to give a written statement fucked up beyond all belief and the officers all thought I was just drunk. They thought it was so funny that I was as drunk as I was (I had to ask the officer to read what it said I had to put in each box for me). But had they known that I had maybe 5 drinks the entire night they would have had a very different outlook about me.

LOL, maybe it's just me but it cracks me up every time I think about that--they were givin' me a hard time like I was "one of the guys" because I was so "drunk".

I do take over the counter drugs...but I haven't seen any brain scans warning me that they are eating away at my frontal lobe.
oh my... things like this really start to make me lose faith that humanity can live on. you do realize that nearly every over the counter drug has harmful side effects. EVERY FUCKING SINGLE ONE OF THEM.

talk about not paying attention, just stop now. Average murder sentences are 16 years. in the example you gave, that would be aggravated murder, so its either a life sentence(with parole eligible after 25 years) or death. Drug possession is about a 4-5 month sentence. Drug trafficking is about a 6 year sentence. All marijuana sentences combined average about 3-4 years. and both types of cases, murders and drugs, can be knocked down. i dont know why you just picked murders.

The drug war doesn't work, marijuana is no more harmful (arguably less)than any number of legal substances, the social cost of prohibition is huge (DEA cost, cost of arrests, cost of imprisoning people, legal costs, loss of income by people who can't get jobs or high paying jobs after being convicted, etc), the government should not tell me what plants I should or should not put in a pipe, cigarette, or bake into a brownie.

There are much bigger issues around than people smoking pot. Why don't we deal with those?

I was on a Car vs. Motorcycle wreck about a year and a half ago... The people on the motorcycle had the green light, they were touring the Ohio River... The 19 year old whom they found out was high on weed went through the red light and killed them both.

His excuse: Someone at work gave him an advil for a headache and it interacted with the weed causing him not to pay attention. Great excuse.

My question to you is though, there is an increased risk of that accident happening if the driver was under the influence of alcohol instead of weed but yet alcohol still legal and causes way more traffic accidents than weed does! So why is alcohol ok??

People accidentally hit people when they are distracted by eating food, drinking things, changing the radio, talking on the phone, yelling at their passengers.

Except those things are all legal, they may be made illegal when driving a vehicle (like alcohol and cell phones) but they are still legal. Why is marijuana special in this regard?

So the question remains, why is weed so special? Why can't we just have it be legal but with stipulations like you can't drive while high/smoking? This is what we do for other substances but why not marijuana?

Some keep asking for us to give good reasons why it should be legal and I think it has been answered through comparison to other legal substances, medicinal, plus the tax benefits and implications it could have financially. The better question remains why the hell is it still illegal??

What about Caffeine. How is it legal to lace 'soft drinks' with it? Remember why they're called 'soft drinks' in comparison to 'hard drinks'. They wanted to keep their patrons addicted and coming back and when the FDA was created most of the original substances were outlawed. Make no mistake that the tobacco industry had no intention of ever letting marijuana becoming legal. After all, who would smoke cigarettes if you could get a much better result from weed than from cigarettes.

The biggest issue with drug use is that it's a personal choice. Sometimes your choices have bad consequences. But they're yours to make. If we allow alcohol, et al, there's no reason harder drugs cannot be legal.

Remember, the government made an end-around when it came to drugs. No drug is 'illegal', they're 'controlled substances' that require a prescription, which the FDA conveniently decided some have no medicinal value, and therefore, you cannot get a perscription to use or possess them. The government never passed a law outlawing marijuana or any other drug.

Because it would be unconstitutional to pass a law making certain chemicals illegal. The reason prohibition took an amendment, rather than a bill to pass.

So most of the DUI crashes that kill people are not a direct result of the alcohol causing the person to lack attention... It was the beer he dropped on the floor that caused him to go left of center and kill someone right?

To those who do it, I have no issue with it... Its not my thing. But to not even be at the scene of an accident where the kid was wigged out of his gord and laughing because he was so damn high and pretend to "know" that the weed didn't cause this accident is just down right stupidity. This is my suggestion. put your wife and children in a car on a two-lane road and at the other end have 50 people getting baked off their asses drive toward them. When you do that and trust your fellow dopers, I will believe your statement. Until then check yourself because the weed is doing what it does best... Make your brain frazzled.
