Anyone else a fan of this show?? I really like it. For those of you that don't know, it took place in Huntington, WV where Jamie is trying to change the school food program like he did in England.

Good show, good idea.
Oliver's complete lack of people skills kind of gets annoying though.

Not really, most of the schools in our area get gov. food which is very unhealthy. Too many free lunch kids to afford a healthy lunch choice.Society wrote:Seriously....fat people are stupid.pepperpot wrote: Good luck with that idea....

Read the end of this story.
The fat content went up 10% when the school system switched to the Jamie Oliver fresh foods menu which means it's not about kids being fat at all.
Jamie Oliver claims that the processed foods are the devil.
I think Mama told him that.
Will you sapult him?

I like the show.
It comes down to the fact that unhealthy/fatty food is much cheaper than the healthy stuff.
Like the family that is spotlighted. I don't think they "enjoyed" eating what they were eating, but the food was cheaper and easier for mom to make by herself.
Look in the grocery stores; the healthy stuff is 2-3x more expensive than the unhealthy stuff. I would eat organic and fresh food if I could afford it.
The same thing with the schools. Does anyone else find it funny that virtually ALL elementary school cafeteria workers are hateful?

What exactly are poor people supposed to do when they could buy a significant amount of unhealthy calories for much cheaper than health food??? Our society is so deformed, we make it nearly impossible for people to live a healthy lifestyle, then wonder why we have so many health problems, healthcare wars, etc.
I'm tired of reality TV exploiting fat people and any other kind of misfit they can find. This dipshit isn't going to make an ounce of difference, he's just giving people some more mind numbing shit to distract them from their miserable TV centered existence. They can put away a bag of doritos while they park their fat asses on the couch for another night. If you can't figure out how to eat healthy then you won't learn from reality TV.....
Gotta love America. Stupid and fat. at least we're on our last leg and soon one of our brilliant presidential choices will put us out of our misery for good.
End rant.....

This is purely anecdotal, but I've never found quality fresh foods to be more expensive than crap. Just the opposite, actually.Strapping Young Lad wrote: What exactly are poor people supposed to do when they could buy a significant amount of unhealthy calories for much cheaper than health food???

School cooks do slave over a hot stove all day or at least warm something up from the previous day.

The fat content increasing isn't a problem, because they are good fats, such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. The fats the kids were getting from the processed food(saturated, trans) are much worse, even if it's actually less fat. I truly believe that processed foods are terrible for you.Chesapeake wrote: Read the end of this story.

This could be the way they are portrayed in the show, but look at the difference in attitude when he goes to the high school from the cooks. They are a lot more friendly. I've seen first hand in a couple different schools where the elementary cooks have a much more negative attitude than the high school cooks; both as a student and a teacher.Chesapeake wrote:Ever hear a close family member say they slaved over a hot stove all day?bigkahuna wrote: The same thing with the schools. I watched it the other night, and I literally laughed out loud when the food director told him that the French Fries met the veggie standard.

No kidding, the food guidelines are seriously screwed up. His meal had like 7 or 8 veggies in it, but didn't meet the standards. The schools meal had a handfull of fries and an OPTIONAL salad, and it did meet the standards.atomica600 wrote: I watched it the other night, and I literally laughed out loud when the food director told him that the French Fries met the veggie standard.
