I'm in a bind. The state of Ohio sent me a bill stating I owe them 250.00 for last year. I was only a resident for 2 months until I went to boot camp. I claimed partial year credit which they took off and now state that I owe them this money. I'm strapped for time during the week as we don't get to leave base. If someone can contact me and let me know what I need to do. File an amendment? I was told by my instructor I could send them my military orders etc and it would clear it up.

It seems like it is a bitch to do taxes in the military....didn't you have another issue earlier?

My mother-in-law works at H&R Block. I can run this past her. May not be today though...

Yeah this is the problem. I finally got the letter monday in the mail showing what I filed and what they fixed. I have no idea why I would even owe them money.

I do know this I now don't pay Ohio tax cause I was able to fill a form out stating that I claim Ohio as my home of record but I'm not a resident.

I appreciate your help.

She had a similar issue last year. Obviously, getting tax information from here might not be the best solution.

Haha my bad. Fixed, I don't know what I was thinking. I don't even go to that site ever.

No I didn't have the same problem last year.

Funny this was mentioned as the first thing I remember is Ytowngirl bringing this type of problem up last year as well. My guess is she ignored her responsibility to pay it last year and is now asked to pay it this year.

You WERE a resident of Ohio and until you graduated boot camp, you still owe your taxes to Ohio. Unless you change residency to Illinois now (or wherever you are stationed) you have the obligation to pay Ohio.

I had a similar situation when I joined the Navy. Started boot Feb. 28th but still had to pay taxes to Ohio until I graduated from boot and moved to D.C. Then, I legally changed residency. So, unless you legally changed residency before the 1st of January, you'd owe Ohio for what you made until you changed it.

holy shit people i didn't have any tax issue last year at all. i don't owe them money. i already talked to the state of ohio and they are fixing it for me.

and you are wrong. i don't owe ohio any money i've made from the navy since i've been active duty outside of the state of ohio. i don't even have to pay them taxes anymore at all and still keep ohio as my home of record.

If Ohio says you owe them, my bet is that you owe them.

I don't owe them. I already talked to the state of ohio tax person and he is going to fix everything for me. Just need to send him a copy of my orders.

This is not true. Income earned while residing/being stationed outside the state is not taxable to the state of Ohio.
