My buddies and I also liked this edition of the Red. Size and quickness are exceptional this year. Those are things that can be measured regardless of the quality of the opponent. Defensive backs are both tall and quick to the ball. Offensive line can boast of having about 8 players who can play without much drop off of ability. Jesse and Shaq also ran with authority along with several other backs. We did not see many blocking assignments missed. Timing on several throws by Pierro was off the mark; this can be expected this early. And how about the left footed soccer style kicker who made all the extra points? This was a real sore spot last year.
On defense, this team can tackle well. Hitting was aggressive and hard; only saw one arm tackle. Cambridge hit a few out patterns that went for most of their gains. Over the years, it seems outside patterns give us fits. The kid from Harrison Central (74) anchored the right side of the defensive line. This kid is both big and very strong.
As a side note: We were told that the big transfer from New Jersey quit the team to concentrate on wrestling. Also, the one from Pitts. N.Catholic left the team. This is yet to be confirmed, but we did not see anyone 6' 7" on that field today.
That's how we saw it. This Saturday will be the test. Lake always gives us our best test. I never make predictions, but this is as fine a group of young men here as I have seen for quite some time. Only time can tell. Once you leave the bigger schools, depth can be a problem and a few key injuries can blow up your season. Let's pray that these kids play injury free.
Cheers.
