Let me edit what I said by not editing it. Retiring numbers for being good at the sport is stupid, retiring numbers for being beyond the sport is borderline ok in my book

no...Jackie Robinson's retired number across baseball recognizes an important and significant societal achievement that came via baseball, but whose importance was felt way beyond the sport.

Though Jordan was a great player; it is in no way comparable.

Jordan did nothing of any significance in the community like Robinson.

Also, its an opinion of who was the best player ever in the NBA. There is no 100% proof to say player A was truly better than player B. Its all opinion based, not significant.

Plus, the lifestyle that Jordan led outside of basketball wasn't really that worthy of praise.

I agree completely with this post. Im a huge Jordan fan(would probably say hes the best ever) but no way should his number be retired league wide.

The purpose of retiring a jersey is to honor the contributions that player made to his respective team. What exactly did MJ do for the Celtics or Suns?

Jackie Robinson opened the door for black players everywhere. His contribution directly affected every team after that. Jordan did nothing of the sort.

Even tho Iit hink he is the greatest of all time...........there are players out there with more points, more titles...........

If you look at Gretzky....and what he did in the NHL......he has sooooo many more points than ANY player....ever. He had 4 cups...if you look at his individual stats compared to everyone else....

Gretzky----2857 career points.

Nxt closest guy is....is messier at 1887. Damned near 1000 points MORE.

PPG....>Gretzky 1.921.
Second place is Super Mario @ 1.883

The active leader is Crosby @ 1.369

When you are tlaking about retiring a number for a league you gotta realllly blow away everyone else in the statistical category..something that no one could ever come close to.

JOrdan has 6 titles...but I think it is easier in the NBA for a guy to take control than in the NHL. Stanely cup is more of a team championship than NBA.

I understand Jackei Robinsons number is retired in MLB...he not alone was a great player but meant much more to the game of baseball than just statue

The thing is with MJ>....I can see him being surpassed in the future. Hell.......Right now Kobe and Labraun are pretty damned good. Lebaron Jamez could become the best all time. Wont win like MJ did...but he is amazing and still a pup (and no..im not cavs or james fan but ya gotta admit...he is great).

MJ stands above.......but not like a Gretzky I mentioned to warrant retiring his number all thru the league. One more prop to what Gretzky did...as I said he outscored the next closest by nearly 1000 points. Think of it.......100 pts is a great season in the NHL.....that means he outscored the next guy by TEN GREAT SEASONS.

MJ just doesnt have those type of numbers. Yeha...highest career avg. Highest playoff average.....but not the highest or best season the NBA has ever seen like Wayne did in his sport.

Sorry to bring another sport into it......just bringing up someone who did get his number retired and how much his stats were above anyone ever.
