Went to the tournament at Bishop Hartley yesterday and I have to say this was hands-down the worst tournament we have ever been to. It was like a bomb went off in the place. Super late start, zero planning or organization all day, mats open all day- it's like, come on man, get somebody on the damn mat already! Eventually the refs pretty much took over and tried to salvage things (to their credit) but it was too little to late, the staff had things completely fubar'd by that point. Somebody needs to get a clue and get their act together next year! Total disgrace.

You and I were obviously at different tournaments. The first divisions started at 11:45am (originally scheduled for 11:30am) The tourney finished at 6:00pm. That's not bad for the number of kids they had.
How did the refs take over? Did they run back to the pairing room and do match cards?
Here's the real problem. You have a bunch of good people donating their time on a Saturday and working hard. Then you get someone that pays their entry fee and think the tournament's about them. It's pretty easy to criticize... It takes no talent.

When people pay their "MONEY" then they are investing into it also. It's awesome that parents help out, it's your duty as a athlete parent! GET OVER IT! When people pay money and invest into your tournament then they expect it to be a well run tournament. So it is kind of about them, because lets face it pal, if it wasn't for them, then you wouldn't have a tournament!

It is not hard to run an open tournament , especially when you consider how low the expectations of the people who go to them are. You pay the money and your kid pretty much gets to practice wrestling from his feet on a half or a quarter of a mat for 3 minutes at a time. People won't even complain too much if you put your high school kids out there as officials to save a buck.

I'm not knocking open tournaments, they are vital to the programs that host them. You don't put in the work so you can increase manufacturing output at some factory in China where 9 year old kids make trophies though, you do it to keep people coming back. If you put out a bad product people will stop buying it.

I would just like to say that it definately is not easy to run an open tournament. As soon as the number of wrestlers becomes more than 125 it is pretty difficult. This added that 98% of the people that should be involved in running the tournament are at the Sectional Tournament, makes the task even more confusing.

This is why most youth tournaments are run on Sundays until after the State Tournament. I know for a fact that if Groveport Madison tried to run a youth tournament but all our Varsity wrestlers and coaches were not involved it would be extremely difficult.

I was not there so I can not speak on how the tournament went, but I can definately say that in NO WAY IS RUNNING A YOUTH TOURNAMENT EASY!

The biggest issue at them is bracketing. If you can't figure out how a bracket works find something else to do with your time, have a bake sale or car wash or something. Running an open tournament is easy.

If it is so easy girevik...why dont you start a company that goes around and hosts youth tournaments every weekend?

Ive run MANY youth tournaments, and while I feel like we have always done a good job...I am exhausted at the end of the day. It is not easy to make sure everything is being done quickly and done right. I typically am running around for hours at a time, not to mention even stepping in and officiating at times. People expect youth tournaments to run as smoothly as a Varsity tournament even though kids dont enter until the morning of the event and you have to try to group them so that they get as many matches as possible. Putting kids in the brackets/pools is hard enough, but keeping up with everything throughout the day, and doing it quickly is a difficult chore.

I already have a job and a family and a life, thanks.

The one tournament a year that I do, which is an easy and a fun thing to do, is enough.

I would like to add two cents in about this tournment. This was a real bad tournment when we had to wait on bout cards for 15 to 20 mins in between after we went through a whole age group, then when the table workers get up and leave and when a parent of a child that even does not even attend this school has to sit down and run a table and they never return and you have to sit there the whole tournment while there kid was wrestling and they never bring someone back to work the table.

Rest assured it runs through pretty quickly and efficiently. We were rolling up mats before 3:00 last year. Barring some major catastrophe like a fire alarm getting pulled or a power outage it will happen again this year. That's how we do it.

Quick question, have you ever in your life suggested or even thought of suggesting to anyone else that they rearrange their entire life because someone else can't figure out how a (edited for cursing, Fab1b) bracket works, or is this something new you're trying? It's definately not something I've ever heard of before, are you following a therapist's or a counselor's suggestion and "turning over a new leaf" or whatever they would call some off the wall (Edited for cursing, Fab1b) like this? It's strange...

Once again, if it's that hard and you can't get it right have a nice bake sale.

I was suggesting that if you are so good at something, why not make a move to doing that for a career. Very few people ever get to do what they are best at and enjoy doing. You clearly think it is a strength for you and you even said you had fun doing it...why not make that change? That is all I suggested. All I want is for people to be happy!

You still didnt say which tournament you ran. I will be happy to send kids there if it runs that well.

And I dont need a bake sale to raise funds...like I said before...I have run MANY successful youth tournaments.

Seriously, don't you guys have something better to do then go back and forth about a youth tournament? If you have a family, use your time interacting with them instead of debating the pros and cons of a youth wrestling tourney.

Girevik, you seem easily agitated and very emotional. I certainly hope your tourneys do go well, because I cannot imagine how you would handle adversity based on reading how worked up you get in your posts.

WOW Girevik, You're way out of line. What tournament do you run??
Instead of "blowing someone's hair back", why don't you make some suggestion points !!!

Do you think people don't rearrange their lives to help run one of the tournaments?? A lot of youth parents know nothing about keeping score or even what the rules are.

If you have such a perfect system of running a tournament, share some of your secrets so everybody can have a good time.

And as far as your last sentence on your first post, you are the disgrace for attacking youth parents who may have never worked a youth tournament before.

Since you're such a know it all, go run a youth basketball or any other youth tournament and see the grief you get because your people don't know the rules.

Fab1b, I rest my case and will not post on this thread again Your Honor! JK!. Its just hard to understand that someone who puts on tournaments cannot understand all the variables to slow it down unless it is an act of GOD!

Nothing personal but as a consumer that can choose from many tournaments on any given week I offer my opinion.

I would gladly take my son to a poorly run tournament than attend an efficient tournament with people who had attitudes towards others that were Holier than thou.
