The "Dispatch" noted today that Jody Shelly, the CBJ's former "designated goon" before being sent to San Jose a couple of seasons ago, will be an unrestricted free agent after this season - and probably will not re-sign with the Sharks.

Ken Hitchcock was one of the few coaches out there who didn't like to reserve a spot for a pure enforcer. The item noted that this could well change under the new management - the post-Shelly Jackets got bullied a lot, IMHO, and suffered some key injuries when they did retaliate (Brassard...)

Shelly still has a house in Central Ohio, lives here in the off-season, and wants to retire here. With the Jackets concerned with endearing themselves to the hometown fans to boost attendance and getting a better arena deal, might bringing Shelly back be a good move?

i think it would be a decent move, no real harm done by bringing him in

Making such a move would serve no purpose.

Look, I like Shelley just fine...he's a nice enough guy and he holds his liquor pretty well, but the guy flat-out cannot play NHL hockey. At a time when Columbus has a GM who's been stocking the farm system and making fairly low-risk moves to fill depth spots until the youngsters are ready to step in, where does Shelley fit in? He'd be the worst forward on the current team, and there's probably three or four guys in Syracuse who would have more value as well.

I'm as big a fan of the true hardcore goons as you'd ever meet (we're talking guys like Dave Brown, Mike Peluso, Todd Ewen, etc), but the guy who can fight but can't play has been largely replaced by the guy who can play and whose fighting ability is a secondary trait. This started in the late 90s, so it's not like this is a recent development.

I would rather see the farm system players be pulled up then signing old players, past their primes...

Bringing back Shelley won't sell thousands of tickets.

Putting a playoff contender on ice and will boost attendance.

Was disappointed with last nights crowd. Weekend game against one of the better teams in the Western conference and they got a "padded" attendance of 16500.

NO. There really isn't a use for enforcers anymore. Laraque got bought out and Brashear is going to be playing in the minors from now on. The Jackets have Boll and Dorsett, no need for a third fighter.

it'd be sweet to see him back but I doubt it happens.

I loved watching Shelly play and defend his teammates. He was not even close to the best player on the ice, but you didn't mess with him or any other Blue Jacket on the ice. I would love to see him in a CBJ uniform again.

FYI, he was traded to the Rangers yesterday.

I don't see him coming back here to PLAY. Once he retires, he will definitely come back here to live. His wife is from SE Ohio.

Shelley was the heart of the team when he played here, Dorsett is the heart and soul of this team now.

As sweet as it would be to get him back, Dorsett has more "hockey skill" and even though he isn't as good of a fighter his energy is as much of an enforcer that the jackets may need for now.

I was happy to see Dorsett get a "A" on his jersey.

Shelley is and always has been a horrible fighter. I'll give him credit for always being willing, but his actual fighting skill is severely lacking.
