Whichever one signs with the team, it won't be tons of cash since the team is expected to have the lowest payroll in the American League Central. The budget is supposedly set around $65 million, which would make the Indians the second-lowest team in the American League, behind the Oakland Athletics.

Branyan did post a .348 OBP last year and hit 31 HR's. He's made improvements since his last time in the bigs for the Tribe. The problem with him is on defense, and he's definitely not the DH I'd want.

This would be Branyan's 4th go around with the Tribe. Dude can hit it a mile....provided of course he hits it.

Why bother? If the Tribe is looking at taking a chance on a player like this, then use the $3-$5 million on a pitcher that might be a reclamation project like Millwood or Pavano. Just play the young guys and hope they get hot and play above their heads. It happens every year in MLB, then if they are in contention make a move near the deadline. It's not like a signing like this is going to improve the club drastically or bring the fans to the ballpark.

This team could not more closely resemble the team from Major League.....new, unproven manager, ace with control problems, a roster full of nobodys (Who the fuck are deese guys?), and an owner that seemingly does whatever it takes to lose/piss off the fan base. Tribe fans, start the music.......

The team from Major League had more talent.

Tribe is looking for rummage sale players and things are shaping up that they just might find some that can help. I'd like to see a pitcher...but a stick such as those listed could make a huge difference, too. I'll beleive it when I see it though. There is a good reason why Branyan didn't produce in the Cleveland when he was here....and that reason is now a coach in Tampa bay.

I really don't see the purpose behind signing a player like this. The moves the last couple years show that we really aren't trying to win, at least not this year. So why make a Pittsburgh Pirate like signing and bring in some over-the-hill player to take away major league at bats from the young "prospects" that we traded for? Sizemore, Choo, Brantley should play as many games a possible. Laporta better be playing everyday between 1B and one of the corner outfield spots. And why not let Marte play a full season at the bigs, the guy flashed some talent last year between Columbus/Cleveland.

I agree. What is the point of signing a veteran, when we are trading other veterans that are better? If we sign somebody, it should be a young pitcher or a younger player that has potential to be an important piece later on. It doesn't make sense to sign any of these guys.

Agree 100%.

Signing a 36 year old to a rebuilding team would make no sense at all.

A strong veteran presence would be nice to bring this young group of guys together.....see the effect of Trot Nixon and Kenny Lofton in 2007, see the effect afterwards.

Branyon had a great season last year. But he's still a human air conditioner. Kinda like the dude the Reds had and played for the Nationals last year.

The signing of ONE veteran stick is not going to ntake that much away from the young guys and may go far in terms of mentoring the young guys. Actually having a batter that opposing pitchers fear may give the young players better pitches to hit, more at bats because rallies may be extended, and may push some guys to get their playing time.
