West Jefferson lost in the state duals to Cuyahoga Heights by a score of 29-28. The deciding factor was a call made by one of the officials which resulted in the loss of two team points. The situation was this.

Meet started at 103. West Jeff wrestlers lost at 103 and then also at 112. At 119 they were in a fairly close match when the West Jeff wrestler suddenly pinned his opponent. The crowd went wild. The West Jeff Wrestler got up walked to the middle and while the crowd was roaring had his arms out from his side, clenched hiis fists and pulled them in, in a manner in which yuu could just envision his saying "YES!!!" after securing a big win.

The official then indicated unsportsmanlike conduct, took a team point, at which time the West Jeff Coaches objected and the official took a team point from the coaches. Then they lose the meet by one.

This reminds me of a few years ago when NCAA football put the celebration rule in and it became such a joke. If you recall officials were calling a penalty everytime a kid smiled. This situation has obviously now entered wrestling with "some" officials. The good ones know when to apply such a rule and remain within the intent. The others do as this individual and hurt kids and teams with this kind of poor application of the rule.

The west jeff wrestlers' obvious excitement was justified and his actions were in no way demeaning or directed toward his opponent. Unfortunately for them they happen to get the wrong official, armed with a new rule and it cost them a state dual meet championship.

From this point forward I now deem this official as the "Excessive Celebration" official.

It this a rule, live with it. Unsportsmanlike taunting. I guess the wrestler wont do that again?

This was the right call. It is unfortunate foe the kids that "DESERVED" this and worked so hard. I will say that I was very disappointed AL DAY with the poor sportsmanship of the West Jeff wrestlers, coaches AND PARENTS. The kid in question displayed more than just this action throughout the day. Him as well as other wrestlers contnues their antics throughout the day. Poor wrestling, taunted the crowd, mouthing thecrowd and coaches and other wrestleers....the officials made the correct call FINALLY dinging a kid...then the coach threw a big fit...yelling, throwing his arms around...continueing with grabbing some papers from under his chair and ripping them up...lol Truly, I saw first hand where the kids learn their behavior...coaches and parents. Parents were screaming obscenities all day...one mother even ran out of the stands screaming and going after the Coyahoga Heights coach. Another mother sat matside to corral the WJ boys up after each match and pull them away!!! Totally rididculous. Its a shame it happened the way it did...but the kid in question and, the coach were asking for it!!! Sweet Justice!!! Congrats Cuyahoga Heights

Thats too bad, but if there was any question about it then there was something wrong with the action. How did Gualteri do overall?

Gualteri won 2 solid matches and dropped a 6-1 decision to Jimmy Dankle.

the kid pinned CH in front of CH coaches...got up, threw his fists and screamed over the CH kid and in the faces of the CH coaches...

The Waynedale crowd was very large and seated right down next to the mat. I was not close enough to hear anything said, however I did not see any body language that made me think there was interaction between the wrestlers and the crowd or between the wrestlers and opposing coaches, at least while the wrestlers were on the mat. Due to the setup of the gym the west jeff wrestlers were standing as a group just in front of the Waynedale crowd. There may have been some words exchanged there. I couldn't tell.

Regarding the coaches reaction. As this unfolded people sitting around me asked why the wrestler was penalized. I told them he must have said something. I thought he must have dropped the F-bomb. After learning why he was penalized I can fully understand the coaches reaction. I think I would throw my arms up and yell too.

Wasn't there so I can't comment on the wrestler. But if the coach got crazy and incited the crowd by going nuts and tearing paper up and what not. Sounds good enough to me to hit him with a point.

Congratulations to Cuyahoga Heights. That was a close hard fought win. Going into the last match (hvy) WJ was up by two points. Made for a very exciting dual. Isnt that what we all do this for, the rush, the thrill of good competition. Sure the points deduction was unfortunate and perhaps uncalled for? But it is, what it is......the points deduction happened the third match of the dual 119. There were still 11 matches left to score points.

West Jefferson had four wrestlers go undefeated on the day. Branham, Reichle, Prather, Fabry. Great wrestling against tough competition.

WJ and CH may dual again in a few weeks at the Sandusky St. Mary's div III duals.

I would like to say Congrats to the CH wrestling team!! And congrats to WJ on a runner-up place!! Both teams did a great job!

Now for the whole issue from a mom point of view.....the WJ wrestler in question was out of line on more than one occasion....along with one of their coaches and a few of their fans. The wrestler taunted the fans the coaches and the wrestlers from opposing teams and in the finals i guess he met up with a ref who wasn't going to overlook it!! The reaction to the team point by the coach showed us spectators where this wrestler gets his attitude!

As stated above the WJ team had plenty of matches after the point loss to win and gain enough points to win the dual, so to say that the referee lost it for them is completely bogus!! They are a very talented team so this loss is definately not the end of the road so move on.

As for the fans the things that i heard yelled at referees wrestlers and opposing fans was completely rude and out of line!! There was profanity and I guess they forgot that it is a highschool sport and ALL the wrestlers have worked hard and deserve a win. I come from a school that is very passionate about wrestling and so are all the fans, but we would not be derogatory toward the kid, parents or coaches.

As for our coaches saying things to the WJ wrestlers that is a complete lie!

The reason I felt the need to do this was because adults in the the crowd were taunting the wrestlers. I heard it myself from elderly men in the crowd and from coaches sitting behind the coaches chairs. These young men are ages 14-18 and sometimes do not have the restraint to resist or ignore comments made by adults in the crowd, other wrestlers or even opposing coaches. I certainly did not want to see one of them say or do something that may end their wrestling season.
The dual is over and we are moving forward. No one from WJ said that we lost on a penalty point call. We know that we did not wrestle our best in that dual and therefore we must settle for runner-up, which isn't so bad.
As for our fans, wrestlers, coaches and parents, we are extremely passionate about the sport and our young men. As parents, we always will protect our children. I will agree that many of us, not just WJ people but all fans, need to have better control over our emotions.
I have a hunch that 1_beast is a Waynedale coach. Who else would say "sweet justice" except a very bitter loser?

Really... then who started this thread... really thought that was a coach.

I know, tho, that the West Jeff wrestlers and coaches will learn life lessons from this... like, "act like you've been there before." Or, just because they did it, doesn't mean we have to do it. Or.... when you are the best, you will have a target on your back. Next year, WHEN they return to state duals, they will do just a little better, on and off the mat. This has always been, to my knowledge, a quality group of young men with a quality group of coaches.

WJ beat Waynedale in the first dual. I believe that it is a coach from Waynedale because I read his other posts on this site. The audacity to talk about WJ being unsportsmanlike......
I can guarantee that the initial post was NOT made by a WJ coach, wrestler, or parent of a WJ wrestler.

The first post may or may not have been by a WJ parent coach or wrestler...really neither here nor there if any poster has an affiliation with any of the schools.
I will not take anything away from the WJ wrestlers as we will see them again in a little over a month making a run at the podium...very solid team with talented wrestlers!
Thank you roughrider mom for your post...I want to applaude you for your actions during that final dual because we saw what you were doing and thought it was great that someone tried to control the situation as you did!
If it was Waynedale fans in the front who were taunting your wrestlers than shame on them and it was uncalled for... I know we were all mixed in with CH and WJ fans also...which probably didnt help the intensity of the situation.

Also you dont have to be a coach to be a "bitter" loser...comes with the passion of the sport.

Rough rider mom..I can assure you that I am not a coach and there are plenty af fans that can verify that, as my identity is not hidden. Many people know whom I am as i have met many people through this site and jjhuddle. I applaud your actions as you took a stance to stop the happenings and protect your boys. I credit you for that. I m just a fan with my oldest in 8th grade. Im no way bitter about our loss as your boys just plain outwrestled our boys!!!! Hats off to you on your finish. Lets put this to rest

I can assure you that none of the coaches from Waynedale said anything bad. Louie Stanley and Eddie Wolfe are very top notch guys. Ask anyone in the state and you'll never hear anyone say anything bad about them. Very well respected by many and it isn't because of the wrestling teams they produce but because of the quality young men they produce.

It's too bad wheh the parents are less mature than their kids. Thank God my kids are wrestling in college. You don't see much of this behavior and banter there. Do yourselves a favor and stop posting and let this thread go away.
