Based off what I saw from LaBrae and even champion, who looked very physical in their scrimmage....it is going to be a very rough season for Campbell fans. Bayuk and Sikora may not be Rozum but you act as if you had Johnny come lately on the sidelines the last several years. I have enormous respect for Rozum and I know fans are always at least cautiously optimistic but the only team on paper (and we all know paper doesn't mean everything) that you will be favored against in an objective's fans mind is Newton Falls or Champion. Jefferson will be 10x better with relatively their entire team back and LaBrae is in the same boat.
Here is my take. For the past several years discipline and the lack of senior leadership have been major issues at Campbell. Now Rozum has returned. And he has been really pushing these kids. From what I have seen over the summer things appear to be getting better.
But I believe the true test is how well these kids will respond should they lose a couple of games at the start of the season. I'm not saying that is going to happen. But over the past few years it has. And all it took was one loss and the wheels would fall off. It got to the point that if the team got down by a couple of scores early in games, the kids would give up. Insteading of the seniors rallying the underclassmen, they went in the other direction. And the underclassmen followed them.
Coach Rozum is a guy who has always believed in his seniors. He counts on them to lead and to set an example for underclassmen. So it will be up to the seniors (I believe there are just 10) on the team to keep things in line and to get their teammates to focus on the next game should they lose the week before. Call me a realist. I am not expecting immediate success. Rozum retained a couple of Bayuk's and Sikora's assistants. Other than that he has his own assistant coaches and is putting in a whole new scheme on both offense and defense. Depth as always will be an issue for Campbell. I do know that the kids have gotten stronger, and are learning and improving as the summer goes along. It will be an interesting season. That being said, I firmly believe that if anyone can turn the Campbell program around, it's Rozum. He's been around the block a few times. And he would not have returned to coaching at Campbell if he didn't believe there was something to be gained. But it might take more than one year to get things going in the right direction.
