They are overrated in the sense they are so propped up that it is unreasonable they are ranked so highly. That bias does show itself in the polls as they have better chance to move up or not drop as far based on conference perception.
Again, they are the best, but they are not head and shoulders above the Pac-12 or the Big 12 and sense they are propped so high, it is fair to say they are overrated compared to where they should be.
Put it another way. The SEC is ranked like an A+, over 95% when in reality they are more like a 91% or 92% while the say Pac-12 is like a B ranked around an 88%. So, the perception is about a 15% gap when in reality it is around 4%. That is technically overrated.
Is there an SEC bias in the polls (which supposedly don't matter anymore)? Yes. But is the SEC better than the other Power 5 conferences? Definitely.
Again, until another conference steps up and consistently wins national championships, that ranking bias for the SEC will remain in place.
Fun facts (after an admittedly quick look-up):
In the BCS era, the SEC has 26 BCS bowl appearances with 17 victories. 10 of those BCS appearances were for the national championship and the SEC won 9 of the 10.
In the BCS era, the B1G has 28 BCS bowl appearances with 13 victories. 3 of those BCS appearances were for the national championship and the B1G won 1 of the 3. Thank God for Ohio State.
In the BCS era, the Big 12 has 21 BCS bowl appearances with 12 victories. 5 of those BCS appearances were for the national championship and the Big 12 won 2 of the 5.
In the BCS era, the ACC has 26 BCS bowl appearances with 8 victories. 6 of those BCS appearances were for the national championship and the ACC 2 won 2 of the 6.
In the BCS era, the PAC 12 has 22 BCS bowl appearances with 15 victories. 3 of those BCS appearances were for the national championship and the PAC 12 won 1 of the 3.
BCS appearances goes to the B1G.
BCS wins goes to the SEC.
BCS championships goes to the SEC...by a mile.
BCS winning % goes to the PAC 12 at 68%.
