I know that Gordon and Ray Rice's situation are apples to oranges but Goodell has the power to make the decision any way he feels.

The suspension could be the full year but I'm more optimistic than I was 24 hours ago after I heard 3 of those 4 new reasons. This attorney getting into the mix could be the curveball that Gordon needs to save his season.

And another thing that I noticed was that Pettine had Gordon running with the 1's part of practice yesterday. Why do that if he's going to be done for the year as of this weekend?

I agree with you BR. I think it'll be downgraded from a full season to a half season, maybe even a 4-6 gamer.

Good lord, every media person who covers the Browns and even people who I know personally, who have attended camp, are saying that Hoyer is "firmly in the lead" and "looks a lot more comfortable running the offense" than Manziel. Manziel seems to be improving, which is better than regressing, but still has a LONG way to go. Unless your name is Chuck Booms or are a JFF nuthugger, an unbiased perspective will see this.

Manziel could overtake Hoyer in this competition but Hoyer is going to have to look totally clueless in those first two preseason games and JFF is going to have to look like a seasoned vet to win this job coming out of camp.

At this point BR I would EXPECT the veteran to be firmly in the lead over a rookie.

It has been a few years since I have been to Latrobe for steelers camp and the rules have since changed. How do they do the training camps now? If I remember right they cannot practice as long or as much under the new CBA. Used to have 2 practices..one open and one closed.

Manzeil will make some plays in the preseason games with his feet. He will look electric at times. Only the coaches will know though if he is doing the right thing and be able to grade him. If JM drops back, sees his firt guy covered and then runs and gains yardage it may look good to the fans, but in reality the coaches may look down on it that he didnt go through his progressions before running. There is more than meets the eye when evaluating a QB such as his understanding of the playbook and reading of defenses that NFL teams will throw out there.

JM will be able to make up for his inexperience and lack of options at WR (assuming Gordon is gone) with his legs and that just may be enough to land him the starting job after a few weeks.

Understood but it's not like Hoyer has been running this offense for years. He's new to it too so they are in the same boat.

If Manziel is better than Hoyer, than he will be the starter over time. I don't see how you just dump Hoyer when he played alright last season before he got hurt.

True, both would be new to the offense, but the veteran still does have a bit of an advantage just by being involved in pro offenses and the speed of the game. Talked to a kid I coached in baseball who is competing for a NFL job at QB and he is trying to unseat a returning backup and he said that just the experience of being in an NFL camp/games gives the incumbent backup an advantage. If they are going to do a legit competition then JM needs reps with the first team.

Agreed. I would like to see JFF eventually be the starter since they used the 1st rounder on him but I think people are looking to throw him out there just for the sake of doing so. Hoyer isn't the long term answer but why throw the kid into the fire when you have the luxury of letting him watch & learn for a bit?

Early reports from today's TC sounds like the Browns front seven is manhandling the O-Line.

Good for the front seven and that's with Dansby sitting out. I think the O-Line may be missing a starter. I know Pinkston's been out.

Could be as simple as the defense just attacking the ball and the OL having to think too much about their reponsibilities in the new offense. Early on it seems that the defense has a little bit of an advantage while the offense gets their timing down.

Yeah, I saw that. Also sounded like there were interceptions o' plenty thrown by the QB's.

I believe Greco has been out as well. Missing your two starting guards, the defense SHOULD manhandle the offense.

A source informed Profootballtalk that suspended WR Josh Gordon's failed drug test barely generated a positive, and it would have been a negative had luck been on Gordon's side.
Gordon was summoned for a urine sample. Those samples are split into two bottles, one marked "A" and the other "B." It's completely random which one is marked "A" and which is labeled "B." "A" is tested first, and if it generates a positive test, then "B" is tested. The limit is 15 nanograms-per-milliliter. Gordon's "A" bottle showed a concentration of 16 ng/ml, while his "B" registered a 13.6 ng/ml. The result was a failed test. If urine sample handlers would have by chance marked the "A" bottle "B" and the "B" bottle "A," then Gordon would be free to play. Gordon is appealing the ban, and his hearing will be held on Friday. There seems to be a decent chance he wins. Jul 29 - 2:21 PM
