This. Kelly is going to pull a Pete Carroll and bolt for the NFL before his former employer gets smashed by the NCAA. Everything I've read about the investigation sounds like Oregon
could get hit hard with sanctions.
If we're going to hire a college coach I'd, personally, rather have O'Brien. What he did at Penn State was incredible. I know the pro game is far different, but he's familiar with it, at least, whereas ol' Chip knows nothing about the NFL. Kelly will probably need to change the offensive personnel dramatically, which probably means OL along with QB. No way can Weeden run Kelly's offense, at least as it is currently constructed at the collegiate level, and the offensive line will have to be athletic and durable. Maybe Thomas & Co. and do it, but maybe not, and I'd hate to see one of the better o-lines in the NFL torn apart.
O'Brien ran some of the spread at Penn St. with McGloin, who is actually quite comparable to Weeden, but also had a solid rushing attack with a bunch of nobodies in the backfield.
I'd like to have Arians in Cleveland, or Jim Caldwell, but O'Brien would be my pick over Kelly.
