Watching the olympic Greco rounds are painful. I hate the rules and some of the pts awarded by the refs are mind boggling. Wonder why wrestling outside the wrestling community struggles look no further!

Agreed, it's boring as hell to watch. It's turned into a hand fighting sumo match.

The new rules haven't done much better for freestyle too. I think it is pathetic how they have taken conditioning out of the sport.

Agree with everyone's comments above. Greco is still better than synchronized swimming and diving. Can't wait for Freestyle.

The two period rule is beyond obsurd, that is when I really gave up on freestyle and greco. A match where you could technically outscore your opponent and still lose because you scored your points in one period never made any lick of sense to me. Then all the clinch stuff, ball draws, challenges, etc.....UGH

You just don't see this type of exciting action anymore. Greco is unbearable. I used to enjoy watching the other countries go at it, but now I can't watch Greco unless an American is in it.

I think Greco is a great training technique for younger wrestlers, but the current competition rules are insufferable.

Not sure if these latest revisions were an attempt to make it more fan friendly or not. If so, they failed.

Not unlike a lot of sports that are obscure to most casual watchers, maybe a more simplified scoring system will attract new fans, not this cluster

Just because I honestly don't know (only becoming a fan of GR/FR recently, watched Folk for a long time), what changes were made recently? I have noticed this years olympics have sucked when the in the past it was pretty exciting.

Two big changegs that immediately come to my mind are #1) the push out rule and #2) length of match.

I also hate the ball grabs. RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure if you did this on purpose, but LOL regardless. Anyway, they used to flip a disc as you probably know. They got rid of the disc, because there were allegations of refs using weighted discs to fix matches. There is a lot of corruption in international wrestling.

Just to piggy off cruiser, there used to be two 3:00 periods. Now there are three 2:00 periods. All you need to do is win 2 of the 3 periods. So essentially the match can end in 4:00, or you can outscore your opponent during an entire match, but still lose. Pretty much why you see no action these days. There is no difference between a 1 point or 5 point win for the period. Once a wrestler gets his 1 point lead he does all he can do to hold onto that lead in order to win the period. Winning by more than 1 does nothing for him the next period as the score is back to 0-0.

I also find it stupid how they changed the tournament format. They now have a single elimination bracket. If you lose the only way you can get back in the consolation bracket (or as they call it the "repechage") is if your competitor reaches the final.

The previous format they had mini pools. Winners of the pools would go onto the bracket 8 man bracket.

I've heard the move referred to as "five on two" when you have ball grabbing in HS wrestling.
