Practice starts tomorrow and I am trying to finalize the schedule. I want to incorporate as many games as possible to keep the kids interested, but obviously want to use games that will be helping these kids build on the basic skills.

So far I've got the following on the list:

Sumo
King of the Mat (to end practice)
Catch the Tail
Barrel rolls (or monkey rolls, whatever you want to call them)
Ants - just found this one online last night:
Have your wrestlers line up by weight and then count off by two's. All ones remove their shirt. One's have control on one mat section while two's have control of the opposite mat section. The middle section is considered no-man's land.
The object is to physically pull the opposing team to your side section of the mat. Wrestlers must stay in the middle section unless actually pulling someone. Leaving the middle section to the safety of your own section can be considered fleeing and can also result in being considered out. When a wrestler is pulled to the opponents side, he is out and leaves the mat or sits down.
Any other suggestions?

Similiar to "Ants", we play "body snathchers".... Split by grade and have the like aged kids go at the same time. split mat into thirds. each team starts on their outer third....on the whistle, the goal is to cross the middle section on your hands and knees while attempting to drag the opposing team members across the middle to the other side....as you meet in the middle...you "snatch" other kids and get them to your third of the mat. Repeat until "1" wrestler remains....

hope this made sense...

hope this helps

I have my high school kids play the shoe game. It was called the shoelace game until the lace covers so I changed it a little. Object is to shoot and scramble to grab opponents shoe. Teaches kids to stay low on shots, get hips away, sprawl, scramble, and body control.

Sumo and King of the Mat worked out well. Ants was a little crazy. Towards the end you just had one kid being pulled on from both sides, one trying to capture him and the other trying to save him. Didn't get a chance to do Catch the tail or barrel rolls.

Divide your squad into equal numbered teams. Have a relay race. Everyone on the "team" does every leg.

Leg 1......Stance, Penetration Step, Stance, Penetration Step (repeat) to the opposite wall and back.
Leg 2......One legged hop to the opposite wall, switch legs on the way back
Leg 3......Army crawl/Seal Crawl/Bear Crawl (whatever crawl) to the opposite wall and back
Leg 4......Full sprint to the wall and back.

Mix it up, put whatever you want into the race. Kids love a relay race.

Winning team supervises the losing teams as they do pushups. Kids love to supervise some pushups.

Each kid hangs his T shirt out the back of his shorts All the kids get into a wrestling stance, whistle blows and everyone starts pulling eachothers shirts out, Last kid standing wins. Great for hip position and staying low, the kids love it!

Kind of like 2 hand touch football but there is no touching or tackling.
When you receive(catch) the ball you can only advance 2 steps. You have only 3 or 4 seconds to get rid of the ball before the defender can get in your face and if you hold it longer than 5 seconds it gets turned over.
On an intercepting the ball goes to the intercepting team where the ball was thrown from.
Its a fun fast paced game that can be played with a football or any other ball.

I agree with you. When it comes to youth wrestling , keep it fun , games are good, what a kid does in grade school competition doesn't mean a thing....What he remembers and how he FEELS about it is all that counts! Keep it fun....From someone in the North east!
