You know I read this story, and it is kinda sad. When you step on the may it doesn't matter if its a man, woman, or alien. It is your opponent....show no fear, and do what you have been trained to do! Apparently...this young man must have been afraid.

Paige Nemec won matche(s) last year as 1st ever girls state qualifier, i think coming 1 win short of placing.

You know I read your post and it made me sad.
Every person has the right to make decisions for themselves and then they must deal with the consequences.
This young man did and did.
People make decisions based on their belief system that I don't understand or agree with everyday, but...
It is not my place question the character of someone because they have a different belief system than I do.

So to be clear...I disagree with your post and feel that you may be afraid that other people may a have different value system than you,
but,
I respect your right to your opinion.
It does make me sad that there are close minded people that attack and name call based on their own prejudice.

When I read that a boy refused to wrestle a girl, my knee-jerk reaction was the same as Go4alOngbOmB. But when you read his comments, you have to respect the kid for standing up for his convictions even when the price is so high.

I have to say the media headlines I have seen on this make it seem like it was done out of spite. However after reading what the young man had to say as well as the girl's father, it seems like it was done on personal beliefs with no disrespect to anyone.

This is wrong on so many levels! It isn't fair for the boys or the girls, and I respect both! The boy for sticking with his beliefs and the girl for beating the boy's Butts to get to states. I think many of you forget what it was like to be a teenage boy all hopped up on hormones! I was so immature that i would of just grabbed her boobs and went for a ride. Then I would have been standing there at "Full Mast" as I watched her get her hand raised. I grew up in Youngstown and started getting beat up by gangs in 6th grade. I'm not scared of much but standing on the mat at Value City in front of all those people at "full Mast", still scares the crap out of me! And I have even matured a little!

Your post made no sense to me at all. Then I re-read the part "I grew up in Youngstown". It makes perfect sense now.

Girls should wrestle girls and boys should wrestle boys. This should be universal for all high school sports. I respect this boy's decision. This cost him a state title as I read he got third last year which in my mind at least makes him a contender. I can't believe this this was just a publicity stunt. He truly gave up something valuable out of conviction. How many state placers do you know that you would accuse a coward?

I'm guessing a girl who wrestles and is good enough to be in state's isn't going to exactly be "aesthetically pleasing" enough to garner full mast status, so it wouldn't be an issue.

At the risk of sounding like a certain poster from up north,

The line between bravery and cowardice is gray and blurred as is the line between chivalry and chauvenism. How you view this young man says more about yourself and your upbringing, than it does about him. Congratulations to Joel Northrup for standing up for his beliefs, Congratulations to Cassy Herkleman for achieving at the highest level in a sport dominated by males. Both are fine examples of what we would like our youth to be.

Unfortunately both wrestlers were knocked out in the second consolation round.

Then obviously you have not seen Paige. Not to mention the fact that this maybe the closest some of these kids have ever been to a female.:o Unfortunately I've seen it happen even when guys wrestle, so what do looks have to do with it? All I'm saying is it really isn't fair to any of these kids that have to deal with it. It is a shame it can't be Male vs Male , Female vs Female.
@ hammer! Thank you for saying what I guess I was unable to say! Nobody is going to argue that the wrestlers as a whole, male or female, are the best kids in all of sports.:D

I unfortunately watched a youth female wrestler go against a group of boys who didnt care if she was a girl. I felt so bad for her and wanted to chastise her dad. She was picked up and thrown down relentlessly. I think its great that they want to do wrestling. But, PC goes only so far...putting these young men and women in such a bad situation.

Every time a story about a female wrestler comes up here, many of the same comments are repeated. I have immense respect for the sport of wrestling and everyone in it, but it still perplexes me that some have such a hang-up that boys will somehow see wrestling girls as sexualized, but don't have a problem with boys wrestling boys and getting into the same "sexual" positions. BTW, I don't think wrestling is "gay", as some hit and run posters always spout about. Wrestling occurs in a controlled environment, not somebody's living room floor where "things" could happen. Personally, to me, an opponent would be an opponent regardless of sex, but I respect this young man's (and anyone else's if they so choose) decision if that is what he was comfortable doing.
As for girls wrestling, I think most (including the female wrestlers, and myself) would agree that it would be ideal to have separate girls wrestling teams/leagues/tournaments, but the reality is that they don't exist in most states, including Ohio. Also, many states/areas don't have adequate non-scholastic venues for female wrestlers, so the only alternative for them is to wrestle boys. Whether you agree with it or not, it is here to stay for the immediate future, at least.
And Sid, not knocking you at all, but I have seen plenty a boy get tossed like a rag doll against every opponent they face. Do you feel the same sympathy for them and want to chastise their father? Again, not an attack, an honest question.
