Columbus City League duals schedule 12-15-10. The first team listed is hosting all other’s are in alphabetical order. At most locations these will be ran as super quad. I just cant ever seem t get excited for city league wrestling, i guess you just had to have wrestled in the city league to get pumped about it.

Usmcdevilo5 in December and January there are 2 required duals for CCL teams and the league tournament is in February at the end of the season. I understand your last post about not getting excited about CCL wrestling. However, when compared to other local school districts that have middle school wrestling most of the CCL kids aren’t exposed to wrestling until they get into high school. Don’t get me wrong there are, have been and will be some studs that come out of the City League.

It is going to be tough to get excited this year.

Agreed, lowsingle 209. I left the city five years ago and I still get fired up about it. It is more than an acquired taste; it is coaching stripped down to its truest form. You work with kids and teach them every aspect of the sport. You also teach many of them how to live a good life. It is very rewarding and very exhausting all at the same time. But what you build with the kids lasts a long time: in the last two weeks I have spoken to all four captains from the 2006 team, and that is not a rare thing. I know LS174, my brother, Ritchie, Sintobin, Jones, Big Chuck, Babby, Valero, Ayers, and of course old legends like Lenny Ball and Rick Baker, all have the same thing.

lowsingle274: When I hear you speak or read what you type... sometimes I wonder how far I am from it. When I talk to other coaches in the OCC, they seem to have their fare share, too. That leaves the MSL. That must be the mountain-top!

I totally agree how they are not exposed to it until 9th grade most likely. I agree that if you can take a kid who is a freshman, and just lacing those wonderful shoes up for the first time in his life and feeling the mat beneath him, and 2 years later he is a state qualifier, then my god you are a freaking amazing coach! Plus kids in the city league are around more broken families and homes, and violence, than most others, that means yes it is a little harder to keep kids focused and actually want to better themselves. I give any body who has coached in the city league props. You are trying to change and mold young minds into hard working and dedicated ppl, something that can stick around for the rest of their lives.

I wasnt trying to knock the city league, i guess i have just never been a city league wrestler or coach adn havent felt the joy you get from it yet. Anything that builds the sport of wrestling is a ok in my book though.

USMC, Cruiser, I know you guys understand how it goes, and Frankly I am sick of making excuses for our kids. We either get it done, or we don't.
Cruiser, you are not very far off from us. The main difference is that you are in an extremely tough league which can either help you or hinder you. You and I are dealing with similar kids on a daily basis, and I know you feel the same pain as us. You are also right, every coach has had thier experience with As a matter of fact I have 2 of your kids now trying to get on the team. Two new transfers from Groveport..
To me, it may sound harsh but broken home, crime, family issues, it doesn't matter if you want to be a good wrestler and have coaches that care about you, you will get it done. If not, you will make an excuse.
If you can't tell, I am getting sick of all the excuses I am hearing from my kids recently...
Either way, coaching is coaching. ALl coaches deall with their share of BullSh*t. They all need to be commended, not just city coaches.

Yea I am a guy who really hates to hear the excuse of i cant or i dont know how, or i hurt or anything really. Look at the Dustin Carter kid, the dude has no legs or arms, and he still wakes up every morning and picks him self up and moves forwarD! That kid could have given up or quit or anything but everyday he keeps going. There are a ton of ppl who have done similar thigns, that put the excuses aside and make things happen. Either way, this is good stuff! I love talking about motivational and inspirational thigns.

I truly commend the City League coaches. They have everything working against them. Its all pretty much been mentioned above. But, they accomplish alot that other coaches may take for granted (no disrespect). They are like fathers to some of these kids who dont have ones who actively participate in their lives. Their successes are very hard to see from outside observers. But, they are there. Coaches who are able to make them better men, students and people are the truly great coaches and teachers.

It’s strange I am a product of the legendary Lenny Ball and because of him I love the sport of wrestling and it makes me push everyday want to make these kids better. I never missed a practice in the 3 years that I wrestled for him and my parents always told me that my job was to go to school and be a kid. Times have changed kids needing to work or always having to help out with younger siblings growing up too fast and not be able to enjoy high school. So the way I view it is if I can help 1 kid turn around, keep them off the streets and get them to graduation then its all worth it. Any success on the mats is just icing on the cake. Out of a possible 196 wrestlers last year (I know we didn’t have that many city wide) there where 22 DQ’s that’s not bad coming from primarily all 4 year wrestlers.
