What was the last movie you watched?

Saw "Black Panther" last evening. It's obviously pretty overhyped, and nowhere near the "cultrural milestone" that it's being reviewed as.

 

Still, it's very good...I'd have it in the top 1/3 of the Marvel catalog for sure.

I am 100% in agreement. Definitely over-hyped and I don't see it as the cultural milestone everyone is playing it out to be (like they did Wonder Woman). 

However, I thought the film was very good...

7.5/10.

Up there with Ironman and Dr. Strange as the best Marvel backstory movie. I truly think Ironman, Black Panter, and Dr. Strange are the top 3 background story movies with Gardians of the Galaxy just behind them. But I kind of put Gardians in it's own class since it is an ensamble cast of heroes unlike the single hero movies.

I think Wonder Woman was better, but Black Panther was really good.

Thought Michael B. Jordan's performance was terrible.

You're not black and you're not a woman, so of course you don't see those films that way. I never cry, but the No Man's Land scene in WW made me want to bawl. I also understand why a man wouldn't have the same reaction, and that's fine.

       Made it a little bit more cool is past fall we stopped at the field in Iowa.

On a more serious note, are you trying to insinuate that a white male has no way to understand or empathize with anyone other than a white male?

I said I thought the movie was great, just not the cultural icon that it is being made out to be. Some people were going outright crazy like they did with WW (which to be honest is one of my favorite superhero movies, they did a fantastic job). Just like they were trying to ban men from certain WW showings in the opening weekend, I actually saw a clip last week on CNN asking when it would be "appropriate" for white people to go see Black Panther so that we weren't stepping too close to their culture or something like that.

Sorry, but I saw both movies on opening weekend, I thought they were both great movies (WW amazing movie) but just believe the cultural significance "hype" was over done on both.

Just imagine the outcry if women and other minorities were asked to hold off on seeing Captain America's first movie so that white men could relish in it first (just an example, to be honest the first Cap movie wasn't amazing, BP and WW were better).

The answer is 0, unless you consider 300 and Road to Perdition comic book movies.

I am trying to tell you that as a male, there is likely no way you felt about WW the way I felt about it. That doesn't make you a bad person, and it doesn't mean you can't have an opinion. I'm glad you liked the film.

I am so confused, one day there is no difference between a man and a woman and one is sexist for saying there is, the next day a man can’t feel the same way about a movie as a woman because it is about a woman hero...

i dont want to make this political but you have to see the inconsistency of that thought process. Either men and women most certainly are different and have their unique strengths and weaknesses or they are “equal” or the same. Can’t have it whatever way suits on a given discussion or topic. 

I too thought the No Man’s Land scene was the pinnacle of the movie, could be seen and inspirational, etc. I did not happen to cry because I am not an emotional person.  

I truly thought WW was a home run of a movie, a true 9/10 maybe even 9.5. But that was because the plot, cinematography, character development, etc, not because it was an “important cultural spectacle”. 

For whatever its worth, it is the only DC movie that hasn’t sucked since the Dark Knight trilogy.

The Ritual on Netflix - 7/10. It's a good horror movie about four guys lost in the Swedish woods.

Heading to watch Game Night this weekend....reviews are pretty decent and I pretty much like anything with Jason Bateman in it, so i have high hopes.

That is not the same as a 33 year old woman waiting her entire life for someone like Wonder Woman to be on the big screen, and then having a different reaction than most men would. There are a lot of movies that I don't connect with as much as the next person because of various factors. I'm not sure why that's surprising or confusing. 

The point I am getting at is that WW is not even close to the break through in women's big screen heroes that people are making it out to be.

Hunger Games and the new Star Wars Trilogy both have lead female heroes in major blockbuster movies, and both were more than a single movie and both came out before WW. That's just in recent movies, I am sure I could go back and think of others.

Same with BP, BP is being heralded as the first African-American superhero comic book blockbuster movie when in fact Wesley Snipes played Blade in the trilogy back in the 90s and Blade absolutely is an AA superhero comic (i could bring up Spawn but to be quite honest Spawn was a terrible movie and I would hate to include it in this discussion).

BP and WW are both good movies, but they just aren't the cultural breakthroughs that people are making them out to be, they aren't/weren't even the "first" to do "it" in their genre.

To be fair, BP was a better movie than Blade, and same with WW with respect to Hunger Games and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (although HG and SWTFA were good).

Can we take the Wonder Woman and Black Panther talk elsewhere?  

Comic book movies are garbage anyway.

Watched "Bad Day for the Cut" on Netflix last night. Solid movie, 7/10
