It's funny. The losses stand out to me more than the gains.

There have been studies done on this, and on average, it takes a $2-3 gain to offset a $1 loss emotionally. I suspect the same applies to winning vs. losing streaks for your teams. A five game winning streak is nice, but when they lose five in a row, a lot of us are ready to break it up and start over.

It's funny. The losses stand out to me more than the gains.  I looked and even with the terrible end of 2018 I am still up 40% from January 2017. You're right.

Behavioral economics is really interesting.

It's mind-blowing, for example, that most people will take $1000 guaranteed over a 15% chance to win $10,000.  The latter has a 50% higher expected value, but risk averse people choose the same thing.  But then when we are talking $1, everyone takes the infinitesimal shot to win the lottery.  So it's not just that people don't maximize expected value, it's that risk preferences actually flip.

I also think part of it is timing (to go along with how, as was said, losses can be more likely to weigh on a person than gains). Because the end of '18 was bad enough that, regardless of how good the rest of the year was and regardless of how '19 has shown an improvement to start with, those months where I was watching shit going downward are what sticks out to me at the moment. Give me a few more months of growth and I'll likely have forgotten about those bad months, but right now they're the main thing I think of when I think about market finances. And it also was such a departure from how things had been trending. For a long time, at least for me, it was gain, gain, gain, gain with an occasional month that had a small loss here or there. So to have a period where there were notable losses also sticks out because I'd guess if you looked at the past handful of years, that period would be in the "stick out like a sore thumb" realm where they're so different from the norm that they're impossible not to notice.

So, to recap:

1. Geeblock used how he hasn't made money to say that no one has made money -- ie: the logical fallacy of using anecdotal evidence to claim something is truth.

And in response:

2. Jmog used how he has made money to say that anyone who has done anything has made money -- ie: the logical fallacy of using anecdotal evidence to claim something is truth.

And that is the Internet in a nutshell.

Did you miss the part when I used the most used/talked about index, the DJIA, to demonstrate that about anyone involved with a 401k or IRA with mutual funds has made money. I used actual evidence to disprove the no one on this site..” comment. Reasonable logical argument was made.

The only people who really care about this are the extreme libs who want so desperately for the attackers to be white MAGA people. And those on the other side who want so desperately for this to be made up by the guy to make people hate MAGA people. That’s it

That isn’t necessarily true. A bunch of fucks have commented on this, including presidential candidates. Of course the derays of the world jumped on it. And they’re all going to look like clowns probably. Wtf is the show Empire anyway?

lol if this is true. CNN reporting he paid those 2 Nigerians to “attack” . Either way no chance his account was ever truthful https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/16/entertainment/jussie-smollett-attack/index.html

He's probably sitting there shaking his head that Chicago PD not only investigated the incident thoroughly, but tracked down his buddies.  In typical hollywood/actor fashion, just a bit too dramatic with the MAGA and the noose.....

It’s hilarious that that’s the stereotype of Trump supporters. And the firefighters in the media didn’t even question it. The newest rumors aren’t in his favor either.

Aside from facing up to 3 years in jail, it will be interesting to see what happens to his career.  Will Hollywood really turn it's back on a gay black man that attempted to exploit that for personal gain?  So much of what the "woke" push isn't exactly real or accurate, so how is what he did all that different?

But watch - rather than condemn him, people will start excusing him because it's "so tough to be a gay black man".  Might even suggest it's so tough that it triggered some sort of psychological breakdown that led him to do this.  And of course the inevitable "while this was staged, this exact[!] thing happens everyday to gay black men all across America".  So he's "still a victim", they'll just have to spin the story a bit.

He did this because he is getting written off the show.  He knows that if he drums up support because Trump is a racist.....they wont be able to cut him without looking bad.

Looking through all the news outlets this morning........sad situation when DOJ/FBI/Executive branch colluded together to run a coup on Trump and only 2 news outlets have any mention of it.

Our country better wake up and the media needs to do their job or we are going to end up like Russia (oh wait.......they are reporting that)

are you more outraged that: it didnt make the news much, there was a coup attempt, or the coup attempt wasn't successful?

Some would say the attempt was warranted.

What is outraging me today?

Well, not really outraged but all these damned federal holidays are driving me nuts.  Yeah, it is a paid day off but I always go and spend more money those weekends as "we should do something since it is a 3 day weekend".

and...this damned weather. Time to get rid of this snow/ice.

Damned raccoon gets on our screened porch but doesn't come around frequently enough to take care of the issue

Two REPUBLICAN law enforcement and legal appointees discussing the 25th ammendment does not equal a coop.  For Trump to have been removed, Pence and a majority of Trump's cabinet would have to approve.

Those on the right that believe the "coup" seriously almost got Trump out of office are about as in touch with reality and how our government works as those on the left (including those currently in Congress) who want to and believe they can get rid of the Electoral College.

I mean in order for the EC to disappear you would need a 2/3's vote in both HoR and Senate to get it started (not happening, but lets assume the Ds can get a super majority in both houses). If it gets past Congress, does any rational human being believe that 38 states will ratify an amendment that lowers their power in POTUS elections? Currently 30 states out of 50 are "over represented" by the EC vs their population (Alaska being the most over represented). Does anyone REALLY think that these at least 18 of these 30 states are going to go along with losing some of their power in the POTUS election cycle? That is assuming that ALL 20 states that would be "gaining" some power would vote to ratify.

The most "over represented" states are typically easy to figure out, look for those that only have 3 or 4 EC votes as 8 of the top 10 are 3 or 4 EC vote states.

The most "under represented" states may surprise, as most on the "right" would assume its New York and California when in fact its more of the "middle of the road" EC vote states, the bottom 10 are: Florida, NC, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Colorado, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Missouri.

According to his logic, if the 25th ammendment were used, it would automatically be a "coup".

Speak for yourself.  This is a very dumb post, without any real evidence.

War is big business.  A lot of tax money is spent on defense and will continue to do so.

It always employs quite a bit of people so I wouldn't be so quick to say just by pulling troops out that the govt is going to all of a sudden have all this extra money to spend on other things.

You could reduce defense spending to what we were spending prior Bush entering the middle east and we would just be fine.  Our economy is not dependent on war.   This theory has been proven wrong twice once government spending was reduced after WWII and the Vietnam war.

To add to the Jussie Smollet hoax, how about the fact the dude was willing to testify against 2 random guys if the cops "identified" two suspects?  You have to be a special piece of shit to do that.  His punishment should be severe.

Not political, but I'm outraged at the sports landscape this time of year.  I used to love college basketball, but not anymore - the one and done thing has ruined it for me.  I don't care about the NBA, have never watched a hockey game on tv, don't want to hear about Nascar "gearing up for another exciting year", have no interest in the pre-Masters PGA season, don't really follow European soccer, have no interest in the NFL draft, don't want to hear blow-by-blow about college football spring practices, don't care about spring training...the list goes on.

The only sports I've watched lately that was even mildly entertaining was the Ax Throwing World Championship.  The guy who won was referred to as the "Tiger Woods' of the sport.  He hit the target every time.  But now that I've seen that, I am good for the remainder of my life.
